Men's Volleyball Sweeps Tri-Match at Roanoke

ROANOKE, Va. – The Randolph-Macon men's volleyball team took the road to Roanoke College on Saturday for two matches, battling Stevenson and Roanoke in non-conference matchups. The Yellow Jackets swept both matches to continue their phenomenal stretch of play.

The Basics:

Scores: Randolph-Macon 3, Stevenson 0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-19)             Randolph-Macon 3, Roanoke 0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-21)

Location/Venue: Roanoke, Va./Roanoke College/Cregger Center

Records: Randolph-Macon (15-14, 5-3 CVC), Stevenson (11-16, 5-3 MAC), Roanoke (7-16, 0-5 CVC)

How it Happened vs. Stevenson:

  • Stevenson opened the first set jumping out to a small lead, 11-8 before RMC went on a 5-0 run to seize the advantage. The Mustangs went on their own run to return to the lead but the Yellow Jackets didn't back down. They went on another 5-0 run to regain the lead which they kept for the remainder of the set. RMC would go on to win 25-21.
  • In the second set, RMC had the lead for most of the set, but never grew it out to a comfortable lead. RMC slowly extended the lead as the set went on as their largest lead came at 22-16 late in the set and finished it in similar fashion, taking set two 25-20.
  • Stevenson flipped the fortune in the third set, leading for most of the set. The Mustangs held a 16-13 lead which RMC answered with a 3-0 run to tie it, and then SU re-took the lead at 19-17 but the Yellow Jackets closed the set on an 8-0 run to conclude the sweep in the first match of the day.

By the Numbers vs. Stevenson:

  • Jarrett Carrano (Beaverdam, Va./Patrick Henry) was the lone Yellow Jacket in double figures in kills, posing 13 in match one as well as six digs.
  • Kody Rogan (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) set up 31 kills wit assists, while also having four aces and a block assist as well.
  • The Yellow Jackets totaled 12 blocks in the three sets, which is the second most in a three-set match this season and first since January 28 against Medaille when RMC had 14.
  • RMC hit .311 as a team in the three sets, which marks the seventh time this season that RMC has had a hitting percentage of over .300.

How it Happened vs. Roanoke:

  • RMC jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but RC went on a 7-2 run to pull ahead by three. Roanoke held a slim lead until the Yellow Jackets finally pulled ahead at 18-17 and didn't let the Maroons back in it. RMC would extend the lead before the end of the set, winning set one 25-20.
  • RMC held a lead early and began to expand the lead, pulling out to a 14-10 lead, but Roanoke went on an 11-5 run to take the lead away at 21-19. A kill by Phillip Van Essendelft (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) kill kickstarted a 6-1 run that RMC went on to end the set and win 25-22.
  • The third set went all too similar, with RMC pulling ahead early and Roanoke stormed all the way back to tie it at 10 and then finally took the lead 18-16. RMC finished the second set on a 9-3 run that stifled the Maroons and gave RMC the sweep in their second match of the day.

By the Numbers vs. Roanoke:

  • Phillip Van Essendelft led RMC with 13 kills on a .500 hitting percentage. He also finished with three blocks in the match.
  • Daniel Nguyen (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) also had double digit kills with 10 on the afternoon with an ace and three digs to his credit.
  • Matteo DeLuca (Glen Allen, Va./Maggie Walker Governor's School) totaled 23 assists with five digs and two blocks for the Yellow Jackets.
  • Mitchell Wyatt (Prince George, Va./Prince George) and John Saxman (Henrico, Va./Mills Godwin) each had nine digs in the match.

Up Next:

Randolph-Macon will be back in action next Saturday for the home finale against Carolina University at 2:00 p.m.
