The Basics
Score: Penn State Harrisburg 4, Randolph-Macon 3
Site/Venue: Ashland, Va./Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park
Records: R-MC 9-1, PSH 6-2
How It Happened
- Senior righthander Cam Furman (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) allowed one run over the first five innings with five hits, two walks and four strikeouts. The Lions tallied a run in the fourth.
- The Yellow Jackets would put up a crooked number in the fifth. Lubsen and Schmitt had consecutive singles to start the inning. Senior Brooks Mazey (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away at first. Lubsen scored to tie the game, Schmitt went to third and Mazey reached second. Junior Matt Myers (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) put down a safety squeeze to bring home Schmitt and give RMC a 2-1 edge. A base hit by junior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) drove in Mazey to make it 3-1.
- PSH tied it with two in the top of the sixth. The Yellow Jackets looked to retake the lead in the bottom of the frame. Junior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) had a leadoff single up the middle and went to second on an errant throw to first. Webb went to third on a groundout. Lubsen hit a ball down the third base line that the third base umpire ruled a fair ball. The home plate umpire said the ball hit Webb while he was in fair territory and called him out. RMC would end up with three hits in the inning, but no runs.
- The Lions put two on with one away in the seventh. They tried a double steal, but sophomore Bere Bauers (Devon, Pa./Devon Prep) stepped off the rubber and threw to senior Carter Johnson (Southampton, Va./Southampton) at third to cut down the runner. The runner from second tried to score on a single to left, but senior Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) threw him out at the plate to end the inning and keep the game tied.
- The Lions scored the eventual winning run with two away in the top of the eighth.
