#10 Softball Goes 3-1 in Grand Slam Classic to Open Season

RALEIGH, N.C. – The 10th-ranked Randolph-Macon softball team kicked off the season in North Carolina for the Grand Slam Classic, playing four games in two days. RMC went 3-1 on the weekend, winning the first three games and dropping the final game to North Carolina Wesleyan.

The Basics:

How it Happened vs. Pfeiffer:

  • Naomi Sadler (Emporia, Va./Brunswick) singled with one away in the first and was followed up by Kayla Davis (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) driving her in with a single through the middle.
  • Ellie Herndon (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) flipped the lineup over after a double to lead off the third. Amanda Lanyon (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) blasted a two-run homer in the next at-bat to extend the RMC lead to 3-0.
  • Pfeiffer added a run in the bottom of the fourth after a walk and a pair of singles. Rilee Baughan (Warsaw, Va./Rappahannock) got out of the jam, getting a ground out with the bases loaded to hold the Falcons to just one run.
  • Salder's second hit of the game turned into another run for RMC, advancing two bases on wild pitches and brought home by Rilee Baughan helping herself out with an RBI single.
  • Baughan stranded two in the fifth and cruised through the next two innings to pick up the complete game win for the Yellow Jackets.

By the Numbers vs. Pfeiffer:

  • Lanyon and Sadler both had two hits in the opening game of the season, with Lanyon picking up two RBI off the long ball in the third, and Sadler scoring two runs and stole a base.
  • Baughan had a hit and an RBI at the plate, while throwing a complete game, giving up one run on four hits in the circle.
  • Kayla Davis notched the first RBI of the season for RMC with her single in the first.
  • RMC has won the season-opener for the second straight season, joining last year's 8-0 win over Mary Washington to open the year.

How it Happened vs. Depauw:

  • RMC grabbed a run in the bottom half of the first inning thanks to a two-out double by Kayla Davis to score Naomi Sadler.
  • Depauw took the lead in the ensuing frame, scoring two runs off back-to-back one-out hits.
  • The two-out magic continued for the Yellow Jackets in the bottom of the second. This time, Jessica Pittman (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) doubled home a run, followed by Amanda Lanyon driving her in with a single.
  • Maddy Bates (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) settled in nicely, stringing together five shutout innings from the third inning on.
  • Depauw stranded the bases loaded in the fourth, thanks to Bates getting a strikeout and a ground out to end the inning. She went all seven for a complete game, helping RMC pick up the win, 3-2.

By the Numbers vs. Depauw:

  • Maddy Bates' final line was a seven-inning complete game, giving up six hits, two earned runs, and six punchouts to hold off the Tigers' comeback attempts.
  • Kayla Davis went 2-3 with an RBI double that kicked off the scoring.
  • Five different Yellow Jackets had a hit in the game, including three hits from the bottom half of the order.
  • Jessica Pittman had an RBI double and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the third.

How it Happened vs. Marymount:

  • RMC grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning. For the third time of the weekend, Kayla Davis drives home Naomi Sadler in the first inning, this time adding another RBI, scoring Rilee Baughan off Davis' two-run double.
  • Reagan Hill (Hanover, Va./Hanover) came around to score off a Marymount error, after her one-out single got RMC going. The Yellow Jackets held a 3-0 lead after two.
  • Kayla Davis added one more RBI to her credit, blasting a leadoff homer in the third to extend the RMC lead to four.
  • After Marymount got one back in the fourth, RMC stranded runners at third in both the fifth and sixth inning but batted around in the seventh to plate five more runs. Three hits, three errors, and two walks helped RMC widen the lead to seal the win, 9-1.

By the Numbers vs. Marymount:

  • The Yellow Jackets were led by Kayla Davis, who was a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-3 at the dish with a home run and three RBI, fueling the RMC offense.
  • Amanda Lanyon was productive in the leadoff spot, going 2-5 at the plate with two singles and a stolen base.
  • Naomi Sadler continued her success on the weekend, picking up two hits in three plate appearances, adding another stolen base as well.
  • Raegan Hill provided offense in the bottom half of the order, also getting two hits on the day, getting on base three times, and scoring two runs.
  • Rilee Baughan pitched her second gem of the weekend, with five strikeouts, allowing just one run.

How it Happened vs. N.C. Wesleyan:

  • NCWU led off the game with a run in the top of the first after an RBI double.
  • As the theme of the weekend, the first inning for RMC saw a Naomi Sadler single, followed by a Kayla Davis double to tie the game at one.
  • The Battling Bishops broke the game open in the middle innings, scoring two in the third, three in the fourth, and two in the fifth.
  • RMC stranded the bases loaded in the fourth that would have brought them back into the game if they cashed in.
  • The Yellow Jackets had life in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs. RMC got the bases loaded, as Bailey Hairfield (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) had an RBI ground out, followed by back-to-back singles by Natalie Robinson (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) and Courtney Guthrie (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) to cut the lead to three. RMC stranded two runners on as NCWU held on to win 8-4.

By the Numbers vs. N.C. Wesleyan:

  • RMC had 10 hits by 10 different players, with Robinson, Guthrie, and Davis all picking up RBI hits.
  • Bailey Hairfield also had an RBI, starting the seventh inning rally and the comeback effort.
  • Naomi Sadler had a hit and a stolen base to bring her total to three hits and three stolen bases on the weekend.
  • Leadoff hitters for the Yellow Jackets went 3-7 in the game for a .429 batting average.
