Gibson Fuels Men's Volleyball Past #14 Marymount

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Randolph-Macon men's volleyball team concluded their conference schedule against 14th-ranked CVC rival Marymount on Friday night in Arlington. The Yellow Jackets stunned the Saints in four sets to grab a much-needed conference victory heading into postseason play.

The Basics:

Scores: Randolph-Macon 3, Marymount (24-26. 25-11, 25-22, 25-18)  

Location/Venue: Arlington, Va./Marymount University/Converse Family Fieldhouse

Records: Randolph-Macon (13-14, 5-3 CVC), Marymount (17-6, 4-3 CVC)

How it Happened:

  • Both teams battled in the first set, with neither team holding much of a lead until the Yellow Jackets opened a 22-17 lead late in the set. From that point on, Marymount outscored RMC 9-2 to take the first set 26-24.
  • RMC pulled ahead early in the second set, which they controlled the entire way. The Yellow Jackets built an impressive 19-7 lead over the Saints that they never wavered from. RMC hit .472 in the set to take a 25-11 win in the second set to even the match at one.
  • The third set went back to being a back-and-forth contest, as neither team pulled away. RMC was able to take a three-point lead at 20-17 which seemed to be insurmountable in a close set. The Saints were able to cut it to two, but RMC finished out the set, winning 25-22.
  • The fourth set stayed close at the beginning, but RMC took a 13-11 lead, and added a 5-0 run, capped off by two straight kills by Kolby Gibson (Bumpass, Va./Louisa) to make it 18-11. RMC and MU traded points the remainder of the set, giving RMC the upset win, winning set four 25-18.

By the Numbers:

  • Kolby Gibson was dominant at the net, totaling 18 kills with just two errors, hitting .571, leading the way for the Lemon and Black. He also had six digs and a solo block.
  • Ian Wagenhauser (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) picked up 13 kills in the match while also having 4 service aces to his credit.
  • Jarrett Carrano (Beaverdam, Va./Patrick Henry) was the third RMC player with double-digit kills, finishing with 11. Carrano also finished with six digs.
  • Kody Rogan (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) added to his conference-leading assists total for the season, adding 37 more assists tonight.
  • RMC has won four of their last five, securing a spot in the CVC tournament and placing them in great position to host the first round.

Randolph-Macon will be back in action tomorrow at Roanoke College for a double dip, playing Stevenson at 3:00 p.m. and Roanoke at 5:00 p.m.
