Rogan Records 84 Assists for RMC Men's Volleyball

Buena Vista, Va. – Freshman Kody Rogan (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) registered 84 assists as the R-MC men's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday.

The Basics:

Scores: Randolph-Macon 3, Roanoke 2 (25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 21-25, 19-17)

            Southern Virginia 3, Randolph-Macon 2 (23-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-14, 19-17)

Records: Randolph-Macon (9-10, 1-2 CVC); Roanoke (7-10, 0-1 CVC); SVU (11-2, 3-1 CVC)

How it Happened (Match 1):

  • The Maroons scored the first three points in Game 1 before a kill by senior Kolby Gibson (Bumpass, Va./Louisa) capped an 11-4 spurt as the Yellow Jackets went up 11-7. RMC had a 21-19 edge before scoring the final four points for 25-19 win in Game 1.
  • Kills by Gibson and freshman Phillip Van Essendelft (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) helped the Yellow Jackets win four of the first six points in Game 2. A block by freshman Hank Foglia (Remsenburg, N.Y./ESM) gave RMC a 13-8 advantage. The Yellow Jackets led 24-18 before three straight points pulled RC with three. A service error gave RMC the 25-21 victory.
  • RC jumped out to a 6-1 lead to take early control in Game 3. RMC got within one at 22-21 before the Maroons posted the 25-22 win.
  • The Maroons grabbed early control in the fourth game and recorded a 25-21 victory.
  • A kill by Gibson in the fifth and deciding game gave RMC its first lead at 6-5. Another Gibson kill put the Yellow Jackets up 8-5. RC scored four straight points to reclaim the lead. The Maroons built a 13-10 lead before two kills by Gibson in a three-point run tied it at 13-13. A block by Gibson and Foglia ended the game with a 19-17 win for RMC.

By the Numbers (Match 1):

  • Gibson finished with 20 kills, while Van Essendeift added 10.
  • Rogan had 51 assists and three service aces.
  • Gibson paced the team with eight digs.
  • Foglia had three solo blocks and seven assisted blocks.

How it Happened (Match 2):

  • The Yellow Jackets had the first points in Game 1 before SVU tied it at 3-3. RMC built a six-point lead at 18-12 before holding on for a 25-23 victory.
  • Kills by senior Jarrett Carrano (Beaverdam, Va./Patrick Henry) and Sean Cunningham helped the Yellow Jackets go up 8-5. SVU pulled within two at 15-13 before Carrano had service aces to secure the 25-18 victory.
  • The Knights had an early 4-1 advantage and pushed it to 16-6 on its way to a 25-17 win.
  • SVU jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in Game 4 and grew to 14-8. The Knights would claim a 25-17 victory.
  • RMC had the first two points in Game 5 and a Gibson kill gave the Yellow Jackets a 10-5 advantage. SVU scored four straight points to pull within one at 10-9. RMC had three match points before the Knights scored four of the final five points for a 19-17 win.

By the Numbers (Match 2):

  • Gibson had 12 kills to pace the Yellow Jackets.
  • Rogan had 33 assists and six digs.
  • Foglia had five assisted blocks.

  • Randolph-Macon will play at Rutgers-Newark on Friday, March 17 at 7 pm before playing at Kean on Saturday, March 18 at noon and St. Francis Brooklyn at 2 pm.
