ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon men's volleyball team hosted the day two of the Macon Invitational on Saturday for their third and fourth games in two days. RMC swept the day in six sets, including an upset win over 11th-ranked Southern Virginia, 3-0.

            Randolph-Macon 3, No. 11 Southern Virginia 0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-19)

Records: Randolph-Macon (6-3, 1-0 CVC), Neumann (0-6, 0-0 ECAC), Southern Virginia (4-1, 0-1 CVC)

How it Happened (Match 1):

  • The Knights kept it tightly contested for a while in the first set, even having the lead 13-10, but a kill by Hank Foglia (Remsenburg, N.Y./ESM) ignited a 15-5 run for RMC to close out the first set in dominating fashion and win 25-18.
  • Again, Neumann took the lead early in the second, leading 4-1 before the Yellow Jackets vaulted out to an 18-9 lead in the blink of an eye. Andrew Burmeister (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) closed out the set with a kill for the Yellow Jackets to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Once again the Knights jumped out to an advantage in set three, but again RMC answered back with a major run, closing out the set and the match on a 21-7 run, finished off by Cade Terrell (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) to sweep Neumann to open the day.

By the Numbers (Match 1):

  • RMC was led by Matteo DeLuca (Glen Allen, Va./Maggie Walker Governor's School), hittng from the outside to the tune of 10 kills.
  • Mitchell Wyatt (Prince George, Va./Prince George) tallied nine kills as well as three aces and four digs.
  • Hank Foglia added seven kills with a .500 hitting percentage.
  • Cade Terrell had another great match, totaling 35 assists on the 41 kills.
  • RMC's team .446 hitting percentage tops the Eastern game a night ago as the season high for the Yellow Jackets.

How it Happened (Match 2):

  • RMC started quickly, roaring out to a 13-3 lead over the Knights after an Ian Wagenhauser (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) kill to put the Lemon and Black securely in front. Despite small runs by SVU, RMC weathered the storm, never letting the lead get any closer than four points and took the first set, 25-16.
  • The second set was much more high-intensity, as both teams battled back-and-forth. Five lead changes later, RMC opened a 21-17 lead which proved to be the difference-maker as the Yellow Jackets held on to take set two, 25-23 and take all advantage into the third set.
  • The Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead to open the set and the lead never changed hands after that. SVU was able to tie it multiple times but each time, RMC answered with a run. The Yellow Jackets went on a 5-0 run late in the set to widen the lead to six thanks to another kill by Wagenhauser. The lead was too much for SVU to overcome as a serve error by the Knights was the final blow, completing the upset sweep for RMC.

By the Numbers (Match 2):

  • Ian Wagenhauser led the way with 13 kills, adding to his team-lead in the category. He also totaled five digs in the match.
  • Kolby Gibson (Bumpass, Va./Louisa) picked up eight kills and a .500 hitting percentage, coming up clutch in key moments throughout the match.
  • Kody Rogan (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory), the team leader in assists, added another 24 to his season total, as he also had seven digs, three aces, and two block assists.
  • Gio DeLuca (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) also picked up five kills as well as two block assists.
  • The win over SVU is the first of its kind in program history. RMC was 0-8 in the five year history of RMC men's volleyball against the Knights.
