How it Happened:
- Kills by Gio DeLuca (Glen Allen, Va/Glen Allen) and Ian Wagenhauser (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) helped RMC jump out to a 3-1 lead early in the first, but the Chargers went on a hefty run to break an 11-11 tie and open a 17-11 lead. RMC stopped the run with three points of their own but it wasn't enough for a first set comeback as LBC took set one, 25-20.
- Inversely to the first, LBC started the second set hot, springing out to a 7-2 lead before RMC went on a 4-1 run to bounce back. The Yellow Jackets creeped back into it, closing the deficit down to 22-21, but the Chargers won three of the final four points of the set to take a two-set lead.
- The Yellow Jackets wouldn't go down without a fight, storming out to a 5-0 lead in set three before LBC tied it at five a side. After the lead changed sides a few times, RMC built a 17-12 lead following a pair of kills by Jarrett Carrano (Beaverdam, Va./Patrick Henry). After the 11-11 tie, RMC ended the set on a 14-6 run to stay alive in the match.
- Once again, Randolph-Macon opened a lead to open set four, this time a 4-1 lead but was quickly erased by the Chargers, who took a 9-7 lead. A Wagenhauser kill sparked a 5-0 run for the Yellow Jackets to spring ahead and not look back the remainder of the set. Similarly to the last set, they closed on a 15-8 run to even the match up at two.
- In the deciding set, LBC took a 5-4 lead, and expanded it to 13-7. RMC was able to take five of the next six points but the Chargers stopped the comeback attempt to win the set and the match.
By the Numbers:
- Wagenhauser and Kolby Gibson (Bumpass, Va./Louisa) were the leaders at the net for RMC. Wagenhauser compiled 23 kills and had six blocks to his credit. Gibson finished with 16 kills with two blocks.
- Gio DeLuca was a brick wall, adding onto his five kills by having eight blocks at the net to lead the Yellow Jackets.
- Cade Terrell (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) had a season-high 39 assists, three off his career high of 42 assists set last year.
- RMC's 58 team kills marks a season high, which was previously 54 in a five-set match against Baldwin-Wallace earlier this year.
