How It Happened
- Despite the big offensive game by the Jackets, it was the Marlins that struck first with a goal just under three minutes in. It wouldn't bother the Lemon and Black too much as they rattled off the next six goals and 10 of the next 11.
- Tiffey led the charge with three goals during that stretch. After the Marlins scored to make it 10-3, Tiffey added two more during a 5-0 run to end the half with the Jackets up 15-3.
- Just 30 seconds into the second half Averna added his fourth of the evening on an assist from Brandon Smith (Sr., Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman). Smith was busy distributing the ball as he totaled six points on five assists and a goal.
- The run extended to 10-0 as five different Yellow Jackets scored to start the third period. In addition to Averna, Avery Tankersley (Fr., Baltimore, Md. / Boys Latin), Ryan Pritchard (So., Crofton, Md. / DeMatha), Derek Marsilio (Sr., Harrisburg, Pa. / Bishop McDevitt), and Duncan O'Brien (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Frank W. Cox) all found the back of the net to make the score 20-3, the Jackets' largest lead of the night.
- From there the Marlins were able to strike up some offense and score the next five goals in a run that stretched into the fourth quarter.
- Both teams evenly split the last six goals with Drew Zak (Jr., Harrisburg, Pa. / Trinity), Tankersley, and Connor Cadigan (So., Phoenix Md. / Boys Latin) all scored for R-MC.
Inside The Numbers
- In addition to Tiffey and Averna, Pritchard and Tankersley also had hat tricks on the evening.
- Jack Smith (So., Stevensville, Md. / DeMatha) added three assists and a goal to give him four points for the night.
- JD Spotts (So., Richmond, Va. / Collegiate) dominated the stripe on face-offs as he won 21-of-28. He reached double-figures in ground balls with 10 as a result.
- Speaking of ground balls, the Yellow Jackets controlled that category by a 48-31 margin. Cameron Foti (Jr., Annandale, Va. / Annandale) added six and Owen Campbell (So., Timonium, Md. / Dulaney) totaled four.
- Goalkeeping was by committee with Sam Averna (Sr., Warrenton, Va. / Fauquier) getting the start and the win to improve to 4-1 on the season. He made six saves on 14 shots faced.
- Oz Potter (So., Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) and Harris Archer (Jr., Baldwin, Md. / St. Paul's) played the third and fourth quarters, respectively. Potter made two saves and Archer made four to put all three over 50% for the game.
