How It Happened
- Bridgewater looked to build momentum early as the hosts scored the opening two goals of the game 53 seconds apart just over five minutes in. The lead didn't last long, however, as Derek Marsilio (Sr., Harrisburg, Pa. / Bishop McDevitt) and Averna scored 43 seconds apart just over a minute later to tie the game. Brandon Smith (Sr., Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) then gave the Lemon and Black the lead as they took advantage of an Eagles penalty to close the frame.
- The Jackets stayed in control and extended the run to 5-0 as Jack Smith and Averna provided the first two goals of the second quarter. It was a sign of things to come as they evenly split all six of the R-MC goals in the frame.
- Bridgewater kept in the game and opened the second half with two of the first three goals, but the Jackets proceeded to go on a 6-0 run to put the game out of reach. Averna, Marsilio and Jack Smith scored the final three goals of the third, while Jack Smith and Averna opened up the fourth with scores followed by one from Andrew Tiffey (Sr., Columbia, Md. / Wilde Lake).
Inside The Numbers
- Jack Averna scored six goals and an assist for seven points on the day. It's the second time he's done that this season with the first coming against Goucher. He now has scored multiple goals and at least one assist in nine consecutive games.
- Jack Smith scored five goals and two helpers for seven points, a new season high for him.
- Marsilio finished with a four point day on two goals and two assists.
- It wasn't just about the offense thought. Defensively the Jackets got a big game out of Sam Averna (Sr., Warrenton, Va. / Fauquier) who made his first start of the season between the pipes. He went the distance and made 13 saves on 36 shots faced on the day.
- The Lemon and Black received a big effort in the circle with winning 20 of 33 faceoffs on the day. JD Spotts (So., Richmond, Va. / Collegiate) took the bulk of them and went 20-for-31 and chalked up nine ground balls in the process.
- Defensively Hayden Keesee (Fr., Williamsburg, Va. / Jamestown) forced three turnovers. Brandon Smith caused another two and picked up four grounds balls.
