Box Score (SALISBURY, Md.) – Jack Averna (Sr., Warrenton, Va. / Fauquier) and Jack Smith (So., Stevensville, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) both scored three goals for Randolph-Macon, but it wasn't enough as the Yellow Jackets were defeated by No. 1 Salisbury in men's lacrosse action Sunday.
The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 11, No. 1 Salisbury 22
Venue: Sea Gull Stadium
Records: Randolph-Macon 2-2, No. 1 Salisbury 5-0
How It Happened
- The Sea Gulls showed why they were the top ranked team as they jumped out to a fast lead with eight goals to start the game. The Jackets eventually got on the scoreboard as Smith scored the first of his three with 3:38 left in the opening period.
- It started a small 3-1 run for the Lemon and Black as Brandon Smith (Sr., Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) scored a pair of goals to start the second quarter. The first came after a Salisbury penalty gave the Lemon and Black a man-up opportunity and he was able to take the helper from Averna 2:47 into the second. Just under four minutes later Brandon Smith found the back of the net again.
- While it was the closest the Jackets could get at erasing the deficit, they did add a three-goal run on two different occasion later in the game. Kevin Andrews (Jr., Fallston, Md. / St. Paul's School), Duncan O'Brien (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Frank W. Cox), and Averna all scored midway through the third. R-MC ended the game with a pair of Averna scores and a goal from Connor Cadigan (So., Phoenix, Md. / Boys Latin).
Inside The Numbers
- Averna kept his streak alive of scoring in every game and now has 13 on the season, fourth most in the ODAC. It's his third consecutive game with at least three goals and has 12 during that stretch.
- Brandon Smith and Harris Archer (Jr., Baldwin, Md. / St. Paul's School) were among the game's leaders in ground balls among non-FOGO players with four each.
For the Sea Gulls
- Cross Ferrara led the hosts with seven points on five goals and two assists. Isaac Thrasher added six on five goals and a helper.
Up Next
