Box Score (ASHLAND, Va.) – Andrew Tiffey (Sr., Columbia, Md. / Wilde Lake) had a seven-point day to lead an explosive Randolph-Macon to victory over visiting Chatham in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. Tiffey paced the Yellow Jackets with four goals and helped the Lemon and Black jump up on the Cougars early en route to the victory.
The Basics
Scores: Randolph-Macon 22, Chatham 7
Venue: Nunnally Field
Records: Randolph-Macon 5-4, Chatham 2-7
How It Happened
- The offense started plugging away just five minutes into the game. Once the first goal came on a Jack Smith (So., Stevensville, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) strike from Derek Marsilio (Sr., Harrisburg, Pa. / Bishop McDevitt), it was like a stack of dominoes started to fall. Just 23 seconds after Jack's opening goal, Jamie Smith (Jr., Roanoke, Va. / Patrick Henry) picked up the ground ball off the face off and went down to score to make it 2-0. Just over 10 minutes in Jack Averna (Sr., Warrenton, Va. / Fauquier) made it 3-0 on the helper from Jack Smith.
- Tiffey started to get the wheels churning after that. He played a part in the next four goals, the first of which was scored by him just 31 seconds later on an Averna dish. Jack Smith assisted the next while Tiffey chalked up assists of his own on goals by Averna and Brandon Smith (Sr., Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) to make it 7-0.
- While Chatham scored to close the first, R-MC made sure a comeback attempt was futile with the first four goals of the second. Marsilio started the run with Ryan Pritchard (So., Crofton, Md. / DeMatha) and Duncan O'Brien (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Frank W. Cox) getting into the scoring mix before the Cougars scored their second of the game to make the score 11-2. Avery Tankersley (Fr., Baltimore, Md. / Boys Latin) and Kevin Andrews (Jr., Fallston, Md. / St. Paul's School) scored at the end of the half to make it 14-2 at the break.
- Tiffey added another pair in the third quarter and assisted on a Jack Smith goal to cap his day. The Cougars added a pair in the meantime to set the score at 18-4 headed to the fourth.
- Matt Williams (So., Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal) got in the scorers column to open up the frame and added another, while Cameron Foti (Jr., Annandale, Va. / Annandale) added a pair himself, including the final goal to set the score at 22-7.
Inside The Numbers
- Goalkeeping was by committee with Oz Potter (So., Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) getting the start and playing the first half. He made five saves on the day before Sam Averna (Sr., Warrenton, Va. / Fauquier) started the third and made four saves. Harris Archer (Jr., Baldwin, Md. / St. Paul's School) completed the day with three.
- Noble Canterbury (Fr., Gainesville, Va. / Patriot) did well in the circle with 15 wins in 27 face-offs. He added five ground balls to help his cause.
- In addition to the four goals and three assists by Tiffey, Averna and Jack Smith also had a big day with six points on a hat trick and three assists each.
- Tiffey's four goals matches a season best previously set against No. 4 Christopher Newport in the second game of the season. The seven points are a new season best.
- Averna has now scored multiple goals and at least one assist in all but the first game of the season.
- The three goals by Jack Smith match a season best scored three other times this year. The three assists tie a season best set once this year. However, his six points are a new season best surpassing the five scored in two games prior.
