How It Happened

  • Both teams exchanged the opening four goals to start the game. Derek Marsilio (Sr., Harrisburg, Va. / Bishop McDevitt) opened the scoring for the Lemon and Black with an equalizing goal 1:37 into the game on an assist from Brandon Smith (Sr., Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman). After the Generals' next goal, Smith dished out another helper to Jack Averna (Sr., Warrenton, Va. / Fauquier) for his first goal of the game.
  • Avery Tankersley (Fr., Baltimore, Va. / Boys Latin) was Johnny On The Spot for the Yellow Jackets next goal as he picked up a ground ball that ricocheted off another shot and immediately put it back on goal. The score gave R-MC a 3-2 lead with 9:28 to go in the first. W&L was able to go on a quick 3-0 run to regain the lead before Averna scored his second to make it 5-4 headed to the second.
  • The visitors controlled the second by shoring up their defense and stopped the Jackets on all their offensive chances. On the opposite end W&L scored three goals in the frame to take an 8-4 lead into the halftime break.
  • The Generals extended their lead to 10-4 before Smith scored a goal of his own to put the deficit back to five. However, W&L scored the next two before Kevin Andrews (Jr., Fallston, Md. / St. Paul's) scored the final Yellow Jackets goal on an assist from Averna.
