Lanyon Slams Softball To Sweep of Southern Va.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(BUENA VISTA, Va.) – No. 12 Randolph-Macon breezed through its only games of the weekend with a sweep of Southern Virginia on a warm spring Friday afternoon. Both games ended early via the mercy rule thanks to the powerful Yellow Jackets bats that pounded out a combined 27 runs on 22 hits.

The Basics

Scores: No. 12 Randolph-Macon 11, Southern Virginia 1 (6 innings) – Game 1
No. 12 Randolph-Macon 15, Southern Virginia 2 (5 innings) – Game 2

Venue: Harvey-Dryden Field

Records: No. 12 Randolph-Macon 14-1, Southern Virginia 2-12

How It Happened (Game 1)

  • The opener saw Randolph-Macon use the long ball with three home runs throughout the game. The first provided the first runs of the game as Sami Davidson (Sr., Stafford, Va. / Brooke Point) sent one over the fence for her first round trip of the season in the top of the second. That made the score 2-0 as Olivia Owens (So., Salisbury, Md. / James M. Bennett) also scored after singling earlier in the inning.
  • An error helped the Knights score their only run of the game in the fourth, but the Lemon and Black answered with four runs in the next half inning. Kayla Davis (Fr., Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) highlighted the inning with a solo home run to make it 6-1.
  • A five-spot in the sixth provided the necessary margin for the mercy rule with Davis hitting her second of the game and fourth of the season to set up the final score. Naomi Sadler (Fr., Emporia, Va. / Brunswick) also scored on the dinger after she hit an RBI double to score Ariana Prymak (Fr., Woodbridge, Va. / Woodbridge) earlier in the inning.
  • Sierra Livingston (So., Dagsboro, Del. / Sussex Tech) capped off the game in the circle as she relieved Gracie Ellis (Fr. New Kent, Va. / New Kent) who improved to 9-1 on the season. Ellis tossed another gem with no earned runs and nine strikeouts to give her 92 on the season.

How It Happened (Game 2)

  • The bats stayed hot in the second game, especially that of leadoff hitter Amanda Lanyon (Fr., Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian). The freshman left fielder had her best game to date as she went 3-for-4 with an eye-popping six RBIs and two runs scored. She highlighted the second game with a grand slam in an eight-run third inning which made the score 9-1.
  • The Yellow Jackets batted around once again with six runs in the fourth inning. Lanyon once again capped off the rally with a two-RBI double that scored Chloe Rose (Fr., Midlothian, Va. / James River) and Davidson leaving her a triple short of the cycle.
  • Even with all the run support Rilee Baughan (Jr., Warsaw, Va. / Rappahannock) didn't need much of it as she limited the Knights to just one run on five hits and struck out two in four innings of work to improve to 5-0 on the season. Maddy Bates (So., Arlington, Va. / Bishop O'Connell) pitched the fifth in relief and added another strikeout.

Inside The Numbers

  • The 15 runs scored in Game 2 are the most Randolph-Macon has scored since a 26-run effort against Sweet Briar during the 2017 season.
  • In Game 2 13 different Yellow Jackets scored runs and 14 different Jackets did between the two games.
  • Randolph-Macon has now won nine straight.
