Men's Lacrosse

Jack Smith Tallies Five Points As Men's Lax Falls to St. Mary's

Box Score

(ST. MARY'S, Md.) – True to form Randolph-Macon and St. Mary's had quite the battle in men's lacrosse with the game coming down to the wire. The Yellow Jackets had an opportunity to tie the game late, but a last shot was wide and time ran out on the restart.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 13, St. Mary's 14

Venue: Jamie L Roberts Stadium

Records: Randolph-Macon 4-3, St. Mary's 6-1

How It Happened

  • The game was nearly even throughout, although St. Mary's did get off to a fast start with the first three goals. It was one of two times a team scored three consecutive times in the game. The second came at the end of the first and the start of the second as Randolph-Macon went back-to-back-to-back. Jack Smith (So., Stevensville, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) scored with 10 seconds left in the first, Ryan Pritchard (So., Crofton, Md. / DeMatha) tied the game up just over five minutes into the second, and Kevin Andrews (Jr., Fallston, Md. / St. Paul's) added a go-ahead goal as the Yellow Jackets took advantage of a penalty to make the score 7-6 with 8:59 left in the half.
  • The Seahawks proceeded to go on a 4-1 run that stretched into the third to regain momentum. Jack Averna (Sr., Warrenton, Va. / Fauquier) and Jack Smith scored consecutive goals to answer and tie the game once again at 10-10, but St. Mary's closed the frame with the final two goals to head into the fourth with the lead.
  • The fourth saw both teams go goal-for-goal. Derek Marsilio (Sr., Harrisburg, Pa. / Bishop McDevitt) was the first to find the back of the net to open the scoring. Penalties played a pivotal role in the next two scores as St. Mary's scored on the EMO chance, but the Yellow Jackets were able to do the same with a two-man advantage to cut the deficit back down to one with 5:12 to play.
  • St. Mary's' Aiden Doyle scored shortly after in what proved to be the game winning goal. Jack Smith eventually scored for the Yellow Jackets with 36 seconds left to cap night.

Inside The Numbers

  • Despite the loss, Gage Turner (Fr., Spartanburg, S.C. / Providence Day) played exceptional between the pipes. The freshman faced 39 shots on the evening and made 16 saves for a save percentage of 53.3%. The 16 saves match his season best set in the season opener at Mary Washington and is the fifth time he's reached double-digits in stops.
  • The Jackets' attack was balanced as five players scored multiple goals. Jack Smith led the way with a five-point night on three goals and two assists. Andrew Tiffey (Sr., Columbia, Md. / Wilde Lake), Averna, Pritchard, and Marsilio all had two goals.
  • Averna, Pritchard, and Marsilio each added a helper for three-point nights. Andrews added two assists for a three-point night as well.
  • Brandon Smith (Sr., Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) picked up five ground balls for co-game-high honors with St. Mary's' Jacob Hendricks and Mitch Boudreau. Jack Smith and JD Spotts (So., Richmond, Va. / Collegiate) each added four.
  • Spotts was 50% on face-offs as he won 15 of the 30 he took. The Seahawks held a slight edge overall, however, as they won 16-of-31 on the night.
  • Randolph-Macon continues to see success on EMO chances with two goals in two opportunities.
  • Doyle led the St. Mary's offense with six goals on the night. Jude Brown added three goals and two assists.
