Men's Lacrosse

O'Brien, Williams Lead MLAX in ODAC Opening Win

Box Score

(ASHLAND, Va.) – In blizzard-like conditions, the Randolph-Macon men's lacrosse team scored a flurry of goals as it defeated Randolph in the ODAC opener Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets scored nine in the opening quarter and the score kept snowballing from there to inundate the WildCats.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 24, Randolph 1

Venue: Nunnally Field

Records: Randolph-Macon 4-2, 1-0 ODAC; Randolph 0-5, 0-1 ODAC

How It Happened

  • The goals came early and often for the Lemon and Black as they scored four in the opening 3:26. Duncan O'Brien (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Frank W. Cox) came on strong later in the frame as he scored three in the last 7:42. The Jackets scored three goals in the last 70 seconds alone to take the 9-0 lead into the second.
  • O'Brien continued his onslaught with a pair of goals to bookend each side of the second quarter. The first game just 38 seconds in while the last made the score 18-0 with 4:43 left in the half. Matt Williams (So., Richmond, Trinity Episcopal) got in the scoring column in the second with back-to-back goals 40 seconds apart early in the period. He added a third almost a minute before O'Brien's to end the quarter.
  • Williams wasn't done as he scored another pair in the third to make it 21-0. It was about that time that the snow started coming down blanketing Nunnally Field and making visibility difficult for both teams.
  • The Jackets were still able to get a few more scores with Patrick Moyer (So., Crofton, Md. / DeMatha) closing the offense with the final two scores. The WildCats eventually got on the board with 35 seconds left to avoid the shutout.

Inside The Numbers

  • O'Brien and Williams both led the offense with six points on the day. Each player score five goals for new career-bests and added an assist. Both scored more goals today than they did in the careers prior to today.
  • Goalkeeping was by committee as Gage Turner (Fr., Spartansburg, S.C. / Providence Day) got the start and win with Oz Potter (So., Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) and Harris Archer (Jr., Baldwin, Md. / St. Paul's School) also playing just over a third of the game.
  • The Jackets' specialists were nearly perfect on the day and won 25-of-20 face-offs. Noble Cantebury (Fr., Gainesville, Va. / Patriot) was 10-for-11, JD Spotts (So., Richmond, Va. / Collegiate) was 9-for-10, and Cade Fick (Fr., Memphis, Tenn. / Memphis University School) was 6-for-8.
  • Possession was dominated in multiple facets by Randolph-Macon. The Yellow Jackets led the ground ball count 69-15, shots by 56-7, and cleared 12-of-15 attempts while limiting the WildCats to 9-of-23.

Up Next

The Jackets will head to Maryland for a non-conference showdown with St. Mary's on Wednesday. Faceoff with the Seahawks is set for 7 p.m.
