Box Score (ASHLAND, Va.) – A battle between two of the top teams in the ODAC lived up to its billing as Randolph-Macon outlasted Shenandoah in women's basketball action Wednesday evening. The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 56, Shenandoah 55
Venue: Crenshaw Gymnasium
Records: Randolph-Macon 13-6, 11-2 ODAC; Shenandoah 15-5, 9-5
How It Happened
- The Lemon and Black got the upper hand on the Hornets early on as a 12-0 run put them up 12-4 in the first. Cheridan Hatfield (Sr., Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial) sparked the run with five points and an assist to give the hosts momentum early.
- R-MC was able to control the game for most of the first half and led at the half 24-20. However, Shenandoah was able to catch fire to start the third and immediately went in front with a 10-0 run. The Hornets were able to take that push used it to take a five point lead heading into the fourth.
- This time it was the Jackets that started out the fourth with fireworks as Catherine Kagey (So., Roanoke, Va. / Faith Christian) hit a jumper and Haley Pasqualone (Jr., Purcellville, Va. / Loudoun Valley) put the Jackets equal at 47-all with a 3-pointer.
- Down the stretch, Kagey played another pivotal part on both ends of the floor to give the Jackets the lead. As Shenandoah's Terese Greene appeared to have an open lane on the right side for an easy layup, she was able to block the shot from behind and get the rebound.
- On the opposite end Kagey took an assist from Hatfield and gave Randolph-Macon the lead on a left-handed layup with 1:10 left to go. During SU's return trip, Kagey intercepted a pass and raced in for an easy layup with 52.1 seconds to go.
- Shenandoah was able to get back within one thanks to a pair of free throws from Greene and Weinel, but Weinel's second attempt was too strong and Becca Anthony (Sr., Amelia, Va. / Amelia) was able to pull down the rebound and secure the win.
Inside The Numbers
- Kagey finished the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Six of those points came during the fourth quarter. Seven of her rebounds were in the first half.
- Juliana Park (Fr., Fairfax Station, Va. / Davidson Day) led another balanced offense with 12 points. She was 4-for-8 from the field and 3-for-6 from range. Hatfield joined her in double figures with 10 points and was a rebound shy of joining Kagey with a double-double.
- Depth was beneficial for the Yellow Jackets as their bench outscored that of the Hornets 21-4.
- Shenandoah outscored R-MC 36-16 inside the paint, but the Jackets made up for it on perimeter play. Randolph-Macon shot 8-of-19 on 3-pointers and shutout the Hornets from deep on all six attempts. It's the first time all season that Shenandoah hasn't made at least one triple.
