How It Happened
- The first set was about as close as it could get with neither team getting a lead larger than three points. That belonged to the Yellow Jackets on a few occasions, but the Eagles stayed with them before obtaining a narrow 22-20 lead late. An Andrew Klein (Jr., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) kill, a block by Gio DeLuca (So., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) and Scotty Carter (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Frank W. Cox), and a James Manning (Jr., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) ace quickly put R-MC back in front at 23-22. A Jarrett Carrano (Jr., Beaverdam, Va. / Patrick Henry) kill put the Lemon and Black at 24, and although Eastern stayed alive with the next point, a pair of errors on the next two points gave the Jackets a 1-0 lead.
- The Jackets looked poised to go up 2-0 with a strong start to the second. A kill by Carrano and a block by DeLuca helped R-MC go up 16-9 midway through before Eastern went on an 8-1 run to tie the set. A pair of Eagles errors allowed the Jackets to serve for game point twice, but Eastern recovered to score five of the last six to even the match.
- After Eastern tied the third set at 13-all, Randolph-Macon had one of its finest stretches of the night and closed the game by scoring 12 of the last 18 points. Daniel Nguyen (Jr., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) and Cade Terrell (So., Glen Allen, Va. / Deep Run) scored the final two points for the 2-1 lead.
- As well as the third set ended, the fourth game started just as bad as Eastern jumped out to a 6-0 lead. The Jackets eventually fought back and were able to tie it up at 11-all. The rest of the way went back-and-forth and saw the Eagles serving for game point twice, but kills from Sean Cunningham (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Kempsville) and Carrano kept the Jackets alive. With the set tied at 25-all, R-MC was able to wrap up the win after an error by Eastern followed by a kill from Carrano.
