ODAC Preseason Favorites To Meet In Women's Hoops

(ASHLAND, Va.) – A pair of one-loss teams in the ODAC will battle it out Friday evening as Randolph-Macon hosts Roanoke. Both teams were picked to finish at the top of the ODAC in the preseason, and true to form, both find themselves near the top.

Both teams are coming off of a loss on Wednesday and are 7-3 over the last 10 games. With Washington & Lee also falling in defeat, the top seed in the conference tournament is still anyone's to take heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.

It was the Cheridan Hatfield (Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial) show as she exploded for a career-high 27 points in a narrow victory over preseason favorite Roanoke. It was the second game during R-MC's shortened four game season in 2021. Hatfield was also perfect on all nine of her free throws and dished out seven assists. Aimee DeBell (Studley, Va. / St. Gertrude) also had a stellar game as she was a rebound shy of a double-double with 13 points and went 6-of-8 from the floor. Becca Anthony (Amelia, Va. / Amelia) was also impressive with 16 points and seven boards.

Last Time Out: Randolph-Macon 70, Mary Washington 73 – Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Crenshaw Gymnasium

Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va. / Faith Christian) had a career-night with 20 points and Becca Anthony followed with 19 as Randolph-Macon came up just short against the Eagles. Kagey shot 7-for-10 from the field and pulled down six rebounds, while Anthony hit three 3-pointers and added seven rebounds.

Roanoke 54, Shenandoah 57 – Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Shenandoah

The Maroons lost their first ODAC game of the season in the final seconds in a back-and-forth game with the Hornets. Shenandoah scored a go-ahead jumper with 13 seconds left and sank two free throws with three seconds remaining to set up the final. Kristina Harrel led Roanoke with 16 points and went 4-for-7 from the field. She was perfect on all eight free throws as well.

Inside The Numbers              

  • The Yellow Jackets have been one of the best rebounding teams in the nation and have outrebounded their opponents by an average of 9.6 boards per game. R-MC is No. 1 in the ODAC in rebound margin and No. 23 in all of Division III.
  • R-MC is also one of the best teams in the nation taking care of the ball as well. Their 246 total turnovers are the fewest in the ODAC on the season and No. 30 in Division III.
  • Juliana Park (Fairfax Station, Va. / Davidson Day) has been a bright spot for the Yellow Jackets in her first season. She is second in the ODAC in 3-point shooting with a percentage of 38.6%, No. 38 nationally.
  • Just ahead of Park for the top spot in the conference in the same category is Roanoke's Renee Alquiza. She has 29 3-pointers on the season and has shot 43.9% from range.
  • Catherine Kagey (So., Roanoke, Va. / Faith Christian) has been impressive on the glass averaging 8.3 rebounds per game, No. 2 in the ODAC. Of those, 3.1 per game are on the offensive end, No. 5 in the league.
  • Cheridan Hatfield has an assis-turnover ratio of 1.28, No. 5 in the conference. Her 3.4 assists per game rank eighth.
  • Roanoke's Kristina Harrel has made 57.9% of her shots from the field this season. That number ranks second and she is currently one of six players to shoot at least 50%.

Becca Anthony
 and Cheridan Hatfield (Sr., Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial) return to the lineup as VaSID All-State selections a year ago. Anthony was also the lone All-ODAC selection for the Yellow Jackets.
