Averna Scores Six As Men's LAX downs Goucher

Box Score

(ASHLAND, Va.) – Jack Averna (Sr., Warrenton, Va. / Fauquier) exploded for six goals and added an assist as he led a high-powered Randolph-Macon offense to a win over Goucher in men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon. A total of nine different Yellow Jackets scored goals in their win over the Gophers.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 20, Goucher 2

Venue: Nunnally Field

Records: Randolph-Macon 2-1, Goucher 0-3

How It Happened

  • The goals came early and often for the Lemon and Black as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. Brandon Smith (Sr., Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) opened up the scoring as he took advantage of a Goucher penalty. He added another goal in the frame to give him two along with Averna.
  • The ball kept rolling with Averna in the second as he added three more tallies. Jack Smith (So., Stevensville, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) scored twice as the Jackets had their best quarter of the short season with seven goals.
  • Randolph-Macon cranked out four more goals in the third, including Averna's sixth, to go up 17-0 before Goucher got on the board late in the period as Jared Heath found Jared Halverson. Halverson added another in the fourth to give the visitors their second goal.

Inside The Numbers

  • Averna finished the day with career highs with seven points and six goals. Jack Smith also had a big game with five points on three goals and two assists.
  • Andrew Tiffey (Sr., Columbia, Md. / Wilde Lake) had a busy day distributing the ball as he finished with four assists. He added five ground balls to lead the team as well.
  • Brandon Smith finished with three goals and added three ground balls. Jamie Smith (Jr., Roanoke, Va. / Patrick Henry Roanoke) added three points on two goals and a helper, Avery Tankersley (Fr., Baltimore, Md. / Boys Latin) chalked up three on a goal and two assists, and Derek Marsilio (Sr., Harrisburg, Pa. / Bishop McDevitt) joined them with three assists.
  • Kevin Andrews (Jr., Fallston, Md. / St. Paul's) had a multiple point day with a pair of goals.
  • Defensively the goalkeeping was done by committee with Gage Turner (Fr., Spartansburg, S.C. / Providence Day) picking up the win with three saves and not allowing a goal in 24:25 of action. Oz Potter (So., Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) and Harris Archer (Jr., Baldwin, Md. / St. Paul's) split the rest of the time with Potter making two saves.
  • JD Spotts (So., Richmond, Va. / Collegiate) had one of his best games ever on face-offs where he won 11-of-15 on the afternoon.
  • Randolph-Macon were quick on the loose balls and held a 47-28 advantage on ground balls.
  • The Jackets were effective moving the ball and were successful on all but one of their 21 clear attempts.
  • R-MC was perfect on the day on EMO chances and scored goals on all three attempts, one in each of the first three quarters.

Up Next

A tough task awaits Randolph-Macon for their next game as they head to Maryland to take on top-ranked Salisbury on Sunday, March 6. Faceoff with the Sea Gulls is set for 2 p.m.
