Tournament Preview: Women's Basketball Heads To Salem

(SALEM, Va.) – The Randolph-Macon women's basketball team will embark upon the Salem Civic Center once again as it takes on Bridgewater in the ODAC Tournament quarterfinals on Friday evening. The Yellow Jackets will enter as the No. 2 seed after earning a share of the regular season ODAC championship, while the No. 9 Eagles advanced after edging out Ferrum in the first round Tuesday.

Tickets are available through the ODAC's Ticket Spicket page  at the link above and are $14 for one adult ages 18 and older for the evening session Friday. Students ages 5 and up are $7. ID may be required.

Catherine Kagey (So., Roanoke, Va. / Faith Christian) and Aimee DeBell (Sr., Studley, Va. / St. Gertrude) each scored 14 points as Randolph-Macon defeated the Yellow Jackets for a second time in three days. They combined to go 13-for-17 from the field as Kagey was 7-of-9 and DeBell was 6-of-8. Kagey also pulled down her eighth double-double of the season.

Last Time Out: Randolph-Macon 83, Guilford 59 – Saturday, Feb. 19, at Crenshaw Gymnasium

The Yellow Jackets cruised to victory and clinched a share of their first ODAC regular season championship since 2011. They made a season-best 51.7% of their shots en route to the victory. With the game still close in the third, R-MC went on a 22-0 run over the course of 7:37 in game time to put the game out of reach.

Bridgewater 53, Ferrum 51 – Tuesday, Feb. 22, at Bridgewater

The Eagles held off a late comeback rally by the Panthers to advance in the bracket with a two-point victory. Ferrum was able to get within one point late, but Bridgewater added a free throw with five seconds left and prevented the Panthers from getting a final shot. Jaden Alsberry led the Eagles with 14 and Erike Nettles followed with 11 points.

Tournament History

  • The Yellow Jackets have witnessed success more than most down in Salem and will look for their 11th ODAC Tournament championship. They will get a chance to defend their 2020 crown after having most of the 2021 season cut short because of COVID.
  • Randolph-Macon's other championships have come in 2020, 2018, 2014, 2011, 2009, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2003, and 1996.
  • Randolph-Macon's overall ODAC Tournament record stands at an astounding 42-17.
  • Randolph-Macon is 18-9 in quarterfinals games.
