Box Score (ASHLAND, Va.) – There were many reasons to celebrate for Saturday's Senior Day and the annual Back To The Hive game for the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team. Not only were the Yellow Jackets' four seniors and team manager honored before the game, but they also helped the Lemon and Black defeat Guilford to clinch a share of their first regular season championship since 2011.
And who was there to watch? None other than the 2004-05 team that went to the national championship game and legendary coach Carroll LaHaye. Both were officially inducted into the Hall of Fame on Friday night.
The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 83, Guilford 59
Venue: Crenshaw Gymnasium
Records: Randolph-Macon 17-6, 16-2 ODAC; 7-16, 5-13 ODAC
How It Happened
- A pair of seniors started the scoring to give Randolph-Macon a quick 7-0 lead as Cheridan Hatfield (Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial) drained a 3-pointer and was followed by a pair of buckets from Aimee DeBell (Studley, Va. / St. Gertrude). Another senior Becca Anthony (Amelia, Va. / Amelia) added another triple to give R-MC a 22-13 near the end of the first.
- Guilord was able to come back and tie the game on a couple of occasions in the second, but consecutive makes by Hatfield late in the half gave the Jackets the lead for good at 34-30 and went into the break up 36-32.
- The visitors got back within one once again after a Carleigh Perry jumper made it 41-40, but then the Jackets caught fire and went into an offensive frenzy. R-MC went on to score the next 22 points and didn't allow the Quakers to score another field goal until the 8:39 mark of the fourth quarter, a time span of 7:37. By that time the score was 67-45.
- R-MC eventually made it a 37-5 run over a stretch of 12:32 to make the score 78-45 with 3:44 to play.
Inside The Numbers
- The last time the Yellow Jackets won at least a share of the regular season championship was in 2011.
- During the aforementioned 22-0 run, the Jackets made nine consecutive baskets and an and-one free throw.
- Anthony started the run with another 3-pointer, one of four she had on the day, as she led all scorers with 25 points. She was nearly perfect in her final game at Crenshaw, leaving the floor 8-of-9 overall, 4-of-5 behind the arc, and 5-for-5 on free throws. On top of that, she led the team in rebounding with seven boards.
- Hatfield joined her in double figures with 10 points with a pair of 3-pointers. Catherine Kagey (So., Roanoke, Va. / Faith Christian) also chipped in 10 points and dished out five assists.
- Showing the team's depth, Marisa Ziegler (Forest Hill, Md. / John Carroll) came off the bench to fire off 11 points to match a season-best for the freshman. She was 4-of-6 from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point range.
- The Yellow Jackets blistered the nets as they shot a season-best 51.7% from the field. They also made 10 3-pointers on the day, the third time this season they made double-digits on treys.
- During the dominating 29-10 third quarter frame, Randolph-Macon was 12-of-17 overall and 4-of-5 on 3-pointers.
- Passing was impressive for the Jackets as they chalked up 25 assists, six more than their previous season best.
For The Quakers
- Lindsay Gauldin led the visistors with 20 points. She was difficult to stop as she missed just one of her seven attempts from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
