Softball Sweeps Mary Washington In Season Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(ASHLAND, Va.) – The softball season started off with a sweep for Randolph-Macon over Mary Washington on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets' bats were ready to go as they mercy-ruled the Eagles before using three home runs to power to a win in the night cap.

The Basics

Score: Game 1 – Randolph-Macon 8, Mary Washington 0 (5 inn.)
Game 2 – Randolph-Macon 6, Mary Washington 2

Venue: R-MC Softball Field

Records: Randolph-Macon 2-0, Mary Washington 0-2

How It Happened (Game 1)

  • The Lemon and Black slugged out six runs in the second inning to jump out to an early lead. Rilee Baughan (Jr., Warsaw, Va. / Rappahannock) got the bats going early with a solo shot to center field before methodical hitting followed. Cameron Hildebrand (Jr., Fincastle, Va. / Southampton) made it 2-0 on an RBI single that scored Naomi Sadler (Fr., Emporia, Va. / Brunswick), while Amanda Lanyon (Fr., Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) and Kayla Davis (Fr., Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) both had two-RBI hits.
  • Lanyon wasn't done as she doubled to left field in the next inning to bring in Maddy Bates (So., Arlington, Va. / Bishop O'Connell) for a 7-0 lead. Olivia Owens (So., Salisbury, Md. / James M. Bennett) brought in the pivotal eighth run when Hildebrand scored on her single to left later in the third.
  • With the comfortable lead, Gracie Ellis (Fr., New Kent, Va. / New Kent) remained super effective and completed the shutout with five of her 10 strikeouts in the final two innings, including the entire side in the fifth.

How It Happened (Game 2)

  • After the dominant win in the first, the bats remained hot in the second as Baughan bombed one over the right field fence for a quick 2-0 lead with Davis also scoring. Sadler followed later in the inning with a two-run round trip that scored Natalie Robinson (Jr., Woodbridge, Va. / Forest Park). Davis got in on the action with yet another two-run homer that also scored Lanyon in the second inning.
  • Mary Washington eventually got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Amina Shakir singled in Morgan Gilbert to make it 6-1. Gilbert ended up scoring the second Eagles run as well when she came in on a Maggie Mrowka single in the seventh.
  • The three two-run homers provided Baughan all the run support she needed as she went the distance in the circle. She allowed the two runs on nine hits while striking out five Eagles in the process.

Inside The Numbers

  • Baughan had perhaps the best day out of anyone as she went 2-for-3 from the plate with two home runs, three RBI, and a walk. On top of that she earned win in the circle of game two with five strikeouts.
  • Davis led the charge of bringing in the most runs with four RBI while scoring two herself. Lanyon joined Baughan with three RBI and two runs scored.
  • R-MC combined for 14 strikeouts while striking out just four times from the plate.
