Men's Volleyball

Men's Volleyball Downs No. 15 Stevenson

Box Score

(ASHLAND, Va.) – In case anyone was wondering, the Randolph-Macon men's volleyball is for real. The still undefeated Yellow Jackets made history as they defeated No. 15 Stevenson in straight sets for their first victory over a nationally ranked program.

A packed Alumni Gym watched on as Drew Klein (So., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) was particularly impressive as he recorded 15 kills and hit .481 in the process.

The Basics

Scores: Randolph-Macon 3, No. 15 Stevenson 0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-19)

Venue: Alumni Gym

Records: Randolph-Macon 8-0, No. 15 Stevenson 7-5

How It Happened

  • Both teams had big rallies to start the first game. Randolph-Macon started the game by jumping out to a 9-4 thanks to a pair of blocks followed by kills from Kolby Gibson (Jr., Bumpass, Va./ Louisa) and Scotty Carter (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Frank W. Cox). The Mustangs immediately answered with a 10-2 run to take a 14-11 lead with the last five points on kills.
  • Eventually the set was tied at 23-all, the 10th time the game was equal, but a couple of errors by the Mustangs put the Lemon and Black up by one game.
  • In the second set, a 6-1 rally by the Jackets set the score at 12-7 in favor of R-MC. The Jackets wouldn't trail the rest of the day and closed the game with a 7-2 run to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Stevenson stayed within striking distance for most of the third as neither team could string together more than two consecutive points until late. That didn't happen until the end as a service error followed by a couple blocks sealed the win. Gio DeLuca (So., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) and Gibson provided the first, while DeLuca and Daniel Nguyen (Jr., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) rejected the Mustangs' final attempt.

Inside The Numbers

  • This was Randolph-Macon's first win against a nationally ranked team in men's volleyball.
  • Klein led the match with 15 kills to give him double digits in the category for all five matches this season. The 15 matches his season best and is his most in a three-set match this season.
  • Both teams were strong along the front lines with a combined 21 blocks in the game. The Jackets recorded 11 of them with Sean Cunningham (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Kempsville) leading the way with seven total, one of which was solo. DeLuca went up for four, one solo.
  • Cunningham is No. 17 in the nation with 1.04 blocks per set after today's win.
  • On the receiving end, Gibson led the team with seven digs. Klein added six.
  • Cade Terrell (So., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) set up the offense and provided 31 assists, one shy of his season best in three-set matches.
  • The Mustangs were led by Tanner Stauffer who had 10 kills on 19 attempts and a hitting percentage of .316. Aidan O'Brien led them defensively with seven blocks.
