Second Half Surge Fuels Women's Hoops for Third Straight Win

Box Score

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Randolph-Macon women's basketball team had their second game in three days in Daytona Beach on Wednesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets handed St. Norbert their second loss of the season after a big second half, 55-43.

The Basics:

Score: Randolph-Macon 55, St. Norbert 43

Location/Venue: Daytona Beach, Fla./Ocean Center

Records: Randolph-Macon (7-4, 4-1 ODAC), St. Norbert (8-2, 4-0 NACC)

How it Happened:

  • The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 7-2 lead over the Green Knights early in the first, but St. Norbert ended the quarter on a 11-3 run thanks to some turnovers by R-MC to lead 13-10.
  • Neither team shot the ball well in the second quarter, as both teams shot under 20% in the frame and combined for just 16 points, as more R-MC turnovers helped St. Norbert extend their lead to seven at halftime.
  • R-MC flipped the game in the third quarter, playing stellar defense and shooting 50% from the field to outscore the Green Knights 18-9 and taking the lead after three quarters of play. Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Chrisitian) posted eight points in the quarter and Jane Elkins (Annandale, Va./Bishop Ireton) grabbed five rebounds to lead R-MC.
  • The defense continued to lock down the Green Knights, and the offense continued to score for the Yellow Jackets in the fourth quarter. Julianna Park (Fairfax Station, Va./Davidson Day) knocked down a pair of threes and Kagey added eight more points and six rebounds as R-MC put up 21 points in the frame to win 55-43.

By the Numbers:

  • R-MC tied a team season high for rebounds with 46, including 14 offensive rebounds. They last had 46 rebounds against Gettysburg back on Nov. 12.
  • Catherine Kagey continued her impressive stretch with another double-double. She posted 22 points and 16 rebounds, leading both categories for the Yellow Jackets. She finished the trip to Daytona Beach averaging 25 points and 13 rebounds per contest. This game marks her fifth double-double of the season.
  • Julianna Park finished with 13 points, hitting four threes, three of which were in the second half.
  • Cheridan Hatfield (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) filled the stat sheet. She had 10 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals to chip in on both sides of the ball in the win.
  • R-MC's defense allowed the Green Knights to shoot just 23% from the field and 16% from three. That marks the lowest field goal percentage and the second lowest three-point percentage by any opponent this season.
