Box Score (ASHLAND, Va.) – The Randolph-Macon men's lacrosse team was victorious in its opening game of the ODAC tournament against Guilford on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The win was the Yellow Jackets' first postseason victory since 2013 when they defeated Hampden-Sydney in the quarterfinals.
The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 15, Guilford 10
Venue: Day Field
Records: R-MC 6-7, GC 3-5
How It Happened
- Guilford scored first and scored the first two goals 20 seconds apart just under five minutes into the game. Derek Marsilio (Jr., Harrisburg, Pa. / Bishop McDevitt) eventually scored midway through the first quarter to make the score 2-1 before the Quakers closed the frame with a late goal.
- The second quarter was much better for the Yellow Jackets by contrast. After splitting the first two goals, Brandon Smith (Jr., Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman), Marsilio, and Jamie Smith (So., Roanoke, Va. / Patrick Henry) all scored goals within a two-minute span late in the quarter to give Randolph-Macon a 5-4 lead at halftime.
- The run extended to five as Jack Averna (Jr., Warrenton, Va. / Fauquier) and Ryan Pritchard (Fr., Crofton, Md. / DeMatha) added goals to extend the lead to 7-4 to open up the third quarter.
- Guilford scored two of the next three before Jack Smith (Fr., Stevensville, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) closed the quarter with the last two goals to give the Jackets a 10-6 lead headed to the fourth.
- Both teams went goal-for-goal four most of the fourth quarter. Randolph-Macon was able to score first, however, and a pair of goals from Averna and Marsilio a minute apart with about five minutes left gave the Jackets their largest lead at 15-9.
Inside The Numbers
