Double Nickles Deliver for #12 R-MC Baseball in 8-2 Win at H-SC

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Seniors Mike Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) and Shawn Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) both had two hits, two RBI and one run as the No. 12 Randolph-Macon baseball team record an 8-2 ODAC win at Hampden-Sydney for its 10th straight victory and an 11-0 start in conference play.

The Basics

Score: #12 Randolph-Macon 8, Hampden-Sydney 2

Site/Venue: Hampden-Sydney, Va./Yank Bernier Field

Records: R-MC 14-3, 11-0 ODAC; H-SC 9-9, 6-7

How It Happened:

  • The Tigers put up a run in the bottom of the third before the Yellow Jackets responded in the fifth. Senior Jacob Selden (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) had a leadoff walk and scored on a two-out double by Shawn Nickles to even it at 1-1.
  • R-MC would take the lead for good in the sixth. Senior Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and went to third on a base hit by sophomore Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby). A base hit by Mike Nickles drove in both as the visitors went up 3-1.
  • After H-SC got one in the bottom of the sixth, R-MC put the game away in the seventh. Senior Reece Yeargain (Chester, Va./Benedictine) reached on an error and scored on a triply by sophomore Brooks Mazey (). Shawn Nickles singled to bring in Mazey, making it 5-2. Nickles scored on a wild pitch, Iannuzzi delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home freshman Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Montecello), and a double by senior Kevin Mooney (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) brought in Mike Nickles to make the final 8-2.

By The Numbers:

  • Iannuzzi went 3 for 4 with one run and one RBI.
  • Shawn Nickles had two stolen bases and Bush swiped one.
  • Senior John Reynolds, Jr. (Bumpass, Va./Louisa) was the starter and winner, going 5.2 innings and scattering seven hits with one earned run. He did not walk a batter and struck out one in raising his record to 2-0.
  • Senior Tyler Dunn (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) fanned three in the ninth to secure the victory.

For The Record

  • R-MC is off to its best conference start since 1987, when the Yellow Jackets went 15-0 in ODAC play.
  • Duphorn has reached base in all 17 games this season.
  • Iannuzzi has reached base in all 16 games in which he has played.
  • Iannuzzi extended his hit streak to nine games, the longest streak for the Yellow Jackets this season.
