Box Score (BUENA VISTA, Va.) – The men's volleyball regular season came to an end for Randolph-Macon as it was defeated in three sets by Southern Virginia Wednesday evening. The Yellow Jackets now look forward to the postseason which starts this weekend.
The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 0, Southern Virginia 3 (25-12, 25-20, 25-19)
Venue: Knight Arena
Records: R-MC 4-5, 4-3 CVC; SVU 13-2, 7-0 CVC
How It Happened
- After a slow start in the opening set, the Jackets gave the Knights all they could handle in the second. Despite going down 5-1 to start the set, R-MC battled back and was able to tie things up at 13-all after an attack error by the Knights. That rally started with five consecutive points capped by a kill by Jarrett Carrano (So., Beaverdam, Va. / Patrick Henry) and an ace by Kolby Gibson (So., Bumpass, Va. / Louisa).
- Unfortunately the Jackets couldn't get over the hump as the Knights scored the next two points. A Sean Cunningham (So., Virginia Beach, Va. / Kempsville) kill brought the Jackets within one to make the score 15-14, but it was the closest the Jackets could get the rest of the way.
- The Jackets remained competitive in the third set. After exchanging points since the score was 6-5 in favor of the hosts, kills by Gibson and Carrano tied the set at 11-11. A service error followed by a ball handling error then gave the Jackets their first lead of the match outside of the first point of the second set at 13-12.
- Southern Virginia responded with the next three points to regain the lead. The Jackets got within one on another couple of occasions, one after a Carrano kill and another after a Dayne Iverson (Sr., Pasco, Wash. / Chiawana) ace, but the Knights were able to keep the Jackets comeback attempt at bay.
Inside The Numbers
- Gibson led the offense with nine kills. Carrano finished with six. Cade Terrell (Fr., Glen Allen, Va. / Deep Run) set up the attack with 19 assists.
- Defensively Connor Logan (Jr., Montpelier, Va. / Patrick Henry) recorded a season-best 11 digs for co-match high honors along with the Knights' Nahuel Recabarren.
- The Knights had an exceptionally strong offense and had an attack percentage of .476 for the entire match. They hit .667 alone in the third.
