Softball Takes Game 2 With No. 2 Marlins

(ASHLAND, Va.) – In a battle of nationally ranked teams, No. 23 Randolph-Macon split a twin bill with No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC softball action Tuesday afternoon. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for tomorrow, but with potential weather systems in the forecast it was moved up a day.

Records: No. 23 Randolph-Macon 4-3-1, 2-2 ODAC; No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan 17-3-1, 3-1 ODAC

How It Happened (Game 1):

  • The game was scoreless until the third when the Marlins scored three runs. Jessica Goldyn provided the first two on a home run to center. Danielle Stewart added the third on ground out to second that scored Madison Glaubke.
  • Virginia Wesleyan added to its lead with a four more runs in the fourth. Goldyn provided another RBI while the other three runs came on a sac fly, a double, and a single.
  • The eighth run came in the fifth on another Goldyn hit.

Inside The Numbers (Game 1):

  • The Yellow Jackets were held to one hit which came by Natalie Robinson (So., Woodbridge, Va. / Forest Park) on a single to center in the bottom of the second.
  • Jessica Pittman (So., Virginia Beach / Va. / Kempsville) and Ali Celiberti (Sr., Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) were the only other base runners for the Jackets. Pittman was hit by a pitch and Celiberti walked.

How It Happened (Game 2):

  • It didn't take long for the Jackets to get the bats going in the second game. Celiberti started the scoring with a double to center that brought in Maddie Stone (Sr., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) who reached on a walk to start the inning. Rilee Baughan (So., Warsaw, Va. / Rappahannock) brought in the second run that allowed Pittman to score.
  • Celiberti wasn't done and helped her own cause as the pitcher for the duration of the second game. After the Marlins tied the game in the top of the third, she led off the bottom of the frame with a solo home run down the left field line. Later in the inning, Shelby Hill (Sr., Mechanicsville, Va. / St. Margaret's) doubled to right and brought in Baughan for a 4-2 lead.
  • True to form, Virginia Wesleyan didn't go away and scored runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the game once again. The Jackets wouldn't let this one slip away, however, and rallied in the bottom of the inning. Stone led off with a single, advanced on a single by Pittman, and scored on a double by Erin Doyle (Sr., Moseley, Va. / Cosby) for the go-ahead score.
  • Celiberti made short work of the Marlins in the seventh and struck out two of the four batters faced for the win.

Inside The Numbers (Game 2):

  • Celiberti got the job done in the circle and at the plate. She finished the game 2-for-4 with a home run and a double. It was her second round trip of the season. Her two RBIs also give her eight on the season.
  • She struck out five batters for the second time this season and is now 2-1 on the season. She equaled the fete at Virginia Wesleyan to start the season in the 5-5 tie.
  • Hill and Doyle also had multiple hit games. Hill went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Doyle went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.

The Jackets are scheduled to be back in action at Mary Washington on Thursday. First pitch of the twin bill with the Eagles is set for 2 p.m.
