Box Score (ASHLAND, Va.) – The Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse team fell to visiting No. 20 St. Mary's in a non-conference affair at Day Field Sunday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets mounted a furious comeback attempt, but the strong first half by the nationally ranked Seahawks was too much to overcome.
The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 7, No. 20 St. Mary's 12
Venue: Day Field
Records: R-MC 2-2, SMC 3-1
How It Happened
- The Yellow Jackets had an impressive start that featured a goal by McKenzie Hynson (Jr., Pasadena, Md. / Northeast) just 35 seconds into the game for a quick lead. After that, the defense was on display as Caraline Cypher (Jr., Havre de Grace, Md. / Havre de Grace) made three saves to keep the Seahawks scoreless. Twice it appeared that St. Mary's tied the game in the first 10 minutes, but both goals were called back after crease violations.
- St. Mary's eventually got on the board midway through the first half on a goal by Lily Davison. She eventually added two more for an early hat trick with around 10 minutes to go in the half. It was the start of an 8-0 run.
- After halftime, the Jackets made some adjustments and slowly started to chip away at the St. Mary's lead. Natalie Webster (Sr., Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) was the catalyst behind the comeback attempts as she scored the first two goals of the half.
- After two more goals by St. Mary's, R-MC started at 4-1 run on goals by Hynson, Bella Samper (Sr., Spring, Texas / Klein Oak), Logan Schweiger (So., Church Hill, Md. / Queen Anne's County), and Kaylyn Hewes (Sr., Linthicum, Md. / North County) to make the score 11-7 with 13 minutes to go. However the St. Mary's defense tightened up and that was the closest the Jackets could get.
