Rhoads Shuts Out Lynchburg In Softball Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(LYNCHBURG, Va.) – No. 23 Randolph-Macon and Lynchburg split a softball twin bill in ODAC action on Wednesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets used a dominant pitching performance to aid early offense in the opener, while the Hornets were boosted by a big third inning in the second game.

The Basics

Scores: Game 1 – Randolph-Macon 3, Lynchburg 0
Game 2 – Randolph-Macon 1, Lynchburg 7

Venue: Aubrey R. Moon, Jr. Field

Records: R-MC 3-2-1, 3-2-1 ODAC; Lynchburg 9-7, 1-1

How It Happened (Game 1):

  • The Jackets got on the scoreboard early thanks to a double to center by Ali Celiberti (Sr., Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan). Maddie Stone (Sr., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) was able to score on the play from second after getting there thanks to two consecutive walks.
  • Another double, this time by Shelby Hill (Sr., Mechanicsville, Va. / St. Margaret's), plated Kamryn Steinruck (Sr., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) to make the score 2-0 in the second. Hill later scored on a single up the middle by Stone.
  • Defensively Madie Rhoads (Sr., Portsmouth, Va. / Nansemond River) dealt another gem in her first appearance after throwing a no-hitter over the weekend. She fanned six, five of them swinging, and allowed just two hits in the shutout.

Inside The Number (Game 1):

  • The offense was spread throughout the lineup as all six hits came from six different players.
  • Stone went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, one run, and one RBI. Erin Doyle (Sr., Moseley, Va. / Cosby) was the only other Yellow Jacket to reach safely twice and did so on a pair of walks.

How It Happened (Game 2):

  • The nightcap was a different story as the Hornets took the initial lead with an unearned run in the first after a pair of errors on the Jackets.
  • Randolph-Macon tied it in the top of the third after Stone singled to right center to bring in Hill. Hill originally reached on a single, advance to second on an error, and then went to third on a passed ball.
  • Lynchburg opened things up in the bottom of the same frame with five runs. Five hits and an error led to the Hornets big inning. The Hornets added an insurance run in the fourth to set up the 7-1 final.

Inside the Numbers (Game 2):

  • The Jackets' bats were much quieter in the second game as Lynchburg's Michelle Lehan struck out eight and allowed two hits with two walks.
  • Stone has been one of the main sources of offense so far this season. With her RBI in the third, she now has either scored or hit in a runner in all but one game this season.
  • Hill has been impressive in her last three games as she has scored four runs and hit in another during the short stretch.
