Men's Lacrosse

No. 11 Christopher Newport Too Much For Men's LAX

Box Score

(ASHLAND, Va.) – The Randolph-Macon men's lacrosse team had a tough test in No. 11 Christopher Newport this afternoon. A quick start looked promising for the Yellow Jackets, but the Captains were able to overcome the initial squall for the win.

The Basics

Score: No. 11 Christopher Newport 24, Randolph-Macon 8

Venue: Day Field

Records: CNU 5-0, R-MC 2-2

How It Happened

  • Two quick scores in the first five minutes gave the Yellow Jackets an early lead. After a couple of big defensive stops Jack Smith (Fr., Stevensville, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) lit up the scoreboard first 3:10 into the game.
  • A turnover in the defensive set up the Jacket offense in prime position and they were quick to take advantage as Derek Marsilio (Jr., Harrisburg, Pa. / Bishop McDevitt) scored on an assist from Andrew Tiffey (Jr., Columbia, Md. / Wilde Lake).
  • From there, the Captains went on a 4-0 run to take the lead. They would never trail again, but R-MC was able to come back and tie the game once again. Brandon Smith (Jr., Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) scored just before the end of the quarter, and Jack Smith was able to equalize at the start of the second on a man-up opportunity thanks to an assist from Jack Averna (Jr., Warrenton, Va. / Fauquier).
  • From there CNU went on another 4-0 run and outscored the Jackets 11-4 in the frame to put the game out of reach.

Inside The Numbers

  • Man-up opportunities aided the Jackets offense greatly as they were 4-of-7 on the power play. Three goals came with the extra man in the second along with their lone goal in the third.
  • Jack Smith led the team with three goals, while Marsilio totaled four points on two goals and two assists in the game.
  • Oz Potter was peppered with shots throughout his time between the pipes. He made it to double digits in saves with 11.
  • R-MC was outshot by CNU 53-31. The visitors also led in ground balls 47-35.
