Venue: Ragan-Brown Field House
Records: Randolph-Macon 6-2, 4-0 ODAC; Guilford 1-6, 0-4 ODAC
How It Happened
- Despite the chilly temperatures outside, both Randolph-Macon and Guilford kept the field house hot with their shooting in the early going of the contest. The teams combined to go 15-of-19 to open the game before cooling off a little at the end of the first quarter.
- The Yellow Jackets scored the final bucket of the frame to tie the game at 20-all and were able to carry that momentum into the second quarter. Catherine Kagey (So., Roanoke, Va. / Faith Christian) and Haley Pasqualone (Jr., Purcellville, Va. / Loudoun Valley) added a pair of jumpers before Juliana Park (Fr., Fairfax Station, Va. / Davidson Day) hit a triple to give the Lemon and Black a 27-21 lead.
- Just as it seemed RMC was about to separate itself from Guilford, the hosts hit a pair of 3-pointers to tie the game. It was the Quakers' first made field goals outside the paint of the game and tied the game with 4:47 to go in the half. The teams stayed neck-and-neck with a Lindsay Gauldin layup giving Guilford a 33-32 lead at the break.
- After some halftime adjustments, the Lemon and Black eventually jump out into the lead for good in the third. Another Park trey capped a 13-4 run to give the Jackets a 45-37 lead. Marisa Ziegler (Fr., Forest Hill, Md. / John Carroll) ended the quarter on a high note with a layup and a 3-pointer sandwiched around a Gauldin basket to give RMC a 52-42 lead going to the fourth.
- The Quakers were able to get back within five after another Gauldin basket, but the Jackets answered with a Becca Anthony (Sr., Amelia, Va. / Amelia) 3-pointer followed by two buckets by Kagey to put them up 61-51. Cheridan Hatfield (Sr., Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial) then followed with a layup paired with an and-one free throw for a 13-point lead, their largest of the game, with 4:31 to go.
Inside The Numbers
- Kagey led a well-balanced offense with 19 points and was excellent from the field where she made 8-of-14. She was also strong on the boards with eight rebounds.
- While she was the only Yellow Jacket in double-figures, six others were within a basket of joining her. Park finished with nine, all from 3-pointers. The other starters of DeBell, Anthony, and Hatfield all had eight.
- DeBell led the team with nine rebounds, while Hatfield pulled down six caroms and dished out six helpers.
- Pasqualone was impressive in her season debut with nine points off the bench. Ziegler finished with seven.
- The Quakers' Gauldin showed why she leads the conference in scoring and finished with 33 points. The good news for the Jackets was the rest of their starters were quiet and combined for 11 points.
- The Yellow Jackets have won their last 12 ODAC games. Including the conference tournament, they have won their last 17 games against teams currently in the ODAC.
