Jackets Launch Four Homers in Sweep of Allegheny

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ASHLAND, Va. – The 18th ranked Randolph-Macon Softball team swept Allegheny on Friday afternoon with the Jackets launching four home runs in game one of the double header and scoring 14 runs in both games.  Sophomore Erin Doyle (Moseley, Va. / Cosby) hit two home runs in game one while junior Ali Celiberti (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) and freshman Rilee Baughan (Warsaw, Va. / Rappahannock) recorded the others.  Doyle also finished game one with five RBI's while seven different Yellow Jackets recorded RBI's in game two.  Doyle would add three more RBI's in game two giving her eight on the day.

The Basics:

Location: Ashland, Va. / R-MC Softball Field

Scores: Game 1: Randolph-Macon 14, Allegheny 1; Game 2: Randolph-Macon 14, Allegheny 0

How it Happened:

Game 1:

  • R-MC would get off to a hot start in game one when senior Maddie Stone (Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) would reach on an error and fellow senior Sami Davidson (Stafford, Va. / Brooke Point) would draw a walk before Doyle launched a three-run homer over the center field fence.
  • Just one batter later Baughan would record her first collegiate bomb when she hammered a ball over the scoreboard in right-center to put R-MC up 4-0.
  • They kept the bats hot in the bottom of the second as senior Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va. / St. Margaret's) would single on a bunt before stealing second.  Stone would single back up the middle scoring Hill.  An error and a walk would load the bases before a passed ball scored a run.
  • Celiberti would lace a double off the left field fence scoring two more before Baughan would rip a double of her own to right field scoring Celiberti.
  • The Jackets weren't done however as Stone would score Hill with a sac fly in the bottom of the fourth before Doyle drew a walk and Celiberti homered over the left field fence to push the score to 12-0.
  • In the bottom of the fourth freshman Kayla Horesky (Woodbridge, Va. / Colgan High School) would double down the left field line before Doyle would pulled a home run over the left field fence for her second of the game and fifth of the season to wrap up the Jackets scoring in game one.
  • Celiberti also excelled in the circle during game one, allowing five hits while striking out three over the course of five innings.

Game 2:

  • R-MC got off on familiar footing in the bottom of the first inning as Hill drew a walk before stealing second and third, followed by Stone drawing a walk and stealing second.  Davidson would single down the line scoring Hill and advancing Stone to third.  Doyle would fly out to left but it was deep enough to get the run home to give R-MC a 2-0 lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets broke things open in the bottom of the second.  Sophomore Kellie Ferguson (Capron, Va. / Southampton Academy) drew a leadoff walk followed by freshman Jessica Pittman (Virginia Beach, Va. / Kempsville High School) doing the same.  Hill would single to center field scoring Ferguson.  Stone would draw another walk before Davidson reached on an error scoring Pittman.
  • Doyle would draw a bases loaded walk to record another RBI and Celiberti would single back up the middle scoring two more.
  • Ferguson drew another walk to load the bases before Pittman did the same giving her an RBI.  Hill would then drive a hot shot through the right-hand side scoring two more to give R-MC a 10-0 lead.
  • The Jackets would get two more runs in the inning as Davidson was hit by a pitch to score a run and Doyle picked up her second walk of the game and her second RBI.
  • In the bottom of the fourth Horesky would be hit by a pitch before moving to second, followed up by a walk drawn by sophomore Isabella Brooks (Fredericksburg, Va. / Massaponax).  Freshman Macy Beville (Sutherland, Va. / Dinwiddie High School) would be hit by a pitch to load the bases for freshman Natalie Robinson (Woodbridge, Va. / Forest Park) to draw another walk and drive in a run.
  • Junior Megan Smith (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge County) would follow that up with another walk giving the Jackets another 14-run performance on the day.
  • Junior pitcher Madie Rhoads (Portsmouth, Va. / Nansemond River) threw all five innings giving up only two hits over the course of those innings and striking out three Gators.

Up Next:

  • The Yellow Jackets will face Greensboro at home on Saturday March 7th in a 1 PM first pitch.
