DiSesa Delivers for R-MC Men's Lax in Win at SMC

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Senior Colin DiSesa (Ashland, Va. / Hanover) scored three times in a 6-0 third quarter as the Randolph-Macon men's lacrosse team remained undefeated with a 17-14 win at St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday evening.

How It Happened

  • The Seahawks netted the first two goals before the Yellow Jackets responded. Brandon Smith scored on an assist from freshman Kevin Andrews (Fallston, Md. / St. Paul's School) three minutes into the contest. DiSesa assisted sophomore Derek Marsilio (Harrisburg, Pa. / Bishop McDevitt) one minute later to level the game. DiSesa had the next goal to put R-MC up 3-2 with 10:00 left in the first quarter. SMC would register the next three scores and lead 6-3 after one period.
  • The first goal of the second quarter belonged to the Seahawks before the Yellow Jackets stormed back. Marsilio scored three straight goals, with sophomore Brandon Smith (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) and Andrews assisting on the first two scores, as R-MC pulled with one at 7-6 with 10:00 left until halftime. SMC pushed its lead back to two before Andrews recorded a man-up goal on an assist by senior James Mahan (Salem, Va. / Salem) as the visitors trailed 8-7 with 5:45 remaining. Mahan would net the equalizer on an assist by senior Brendan Markovic (Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) with 4:00 left in the second period. The Seahawks would have the final three goals of the quarter and take an 11-8 lead at intermission.
  • The Yellow Jackets roared out of halftime and netted three quick goals. Andrews assisted DiSesa 30 seconds into the third period. Marsilio fed Andrews 90 seconds later and DiSesa tied the game with 12:00 left in the third quarter. Markovic scored on an assist by Andrews as R-MC reclaimed the lead at 12-11 with 8:10 remaining. DiSesa and Marsilio added goals to make it a 6-0 run as the Yellow Jackets went up 14-11 with 3:14 left. That would be the tally heading to the final period.
  • Senior Ryan Tiffey (Columbia, Md. / Wilde Lake) made it seven straight goals for the visitors, scoring less than a minute into the fourth quarter on an assist by DiSesa to up the advantage to 15-11. SMC would notch the next two goals to cut the deficit in half at 15-13 with 6:30 remaining. The Seahawks pulled within one 45 seconds later before Markovic scored on an assist by DiSesa to make it a two-goal game at 16-14 with 4:45 left. DiSesa put the game away with a score with 39 seconds left that made the final 17-14.

Inside The Numbers

  • DiSesa paced the victors with eight points, netting five goals and dishing out three assists. Marsilio had five goals and one assist, while Andrews tallied two goals and four assists. Markovic finished with two goals and one assist.
  • Sophomore Austin Hardee (Portsmouth, Va. / Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) earned the win in relief, recording four saves over the final 38:35.
  • The Yellow Jackets won 23 of 33 face offs in the contest, including 8 for 12 in the second half. Senior Dan Muller (Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) won 18 of 24 face offs, while senior Joe Maranto (Joppa, Md. / Fallston) won 4 of 7.
  • R-MC had a 24-12 advantage in ground balls. Senior Tyler Flora (Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover) led the Yellow Jackets with six, while Markovic and senior Ben Swavely (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown East) both had three.
  • Swavely topped the R-MC defense with three caused turnovers.
