Men's Lacrosse Earns Runaway Win To Open Season

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon Men's Lacrosse scored 19 goals as the Yellow Jackets quickly ran away from the Methodist Monarchs on Saturday afternoon to open the 2020 campaign with a win.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 19, Methodist 5

Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./Day Field

Records: Randolph-Macon (1-0), Methodist (0-1)

How It Happened

  • Senior Brendan Markovic (Westminster, MD / Winters Mill) got the ball rolling with a score less than two minutes into the game. Methodist leveled the score moments later as both squads put a goal on the board in the first five minutes. But that was where the closeness ended. Markovic scored twice more in the first ten minutes of the game, the first of which came on a man-advantage situation and was assisted by senior Colin DiSesa (Ashland, VA / Hanover). Sophomore Derek Marsilio (Harrisburg, PA / Bishop McDevitt) scored with about a minute-and-a-half to go after taking the pass from fellow sophomore Brandon Smith (Harrisburg, PA / Bishop McDevitt). Smith also offered an assist to DiSesa to score with just seconds to go in the frame as the Yellow Jackets left the quarter with a 5-1 lead.
  • The real separation came in the second quarter. The Yellow Jackets scored five straight, with the first coming from sophomore Andrew Tiffey (Columbia, MD / Wilde Lake). DiSesa had a pair in a row, the second of which was assisted by Markovic. Smith got his own goal to add to the stat line as the Yellow Jackets led 9-1 after his score. Senior Tom Prusak (Phoenix, MD / St. Paul's) added a goal with about seven minutes to go in the quarter. Methodist added a goal with 5:25 remaining in the period before Tiffey connected with DiSesa for R-MC's 11th goal a few moments later. Sophomore Jack Averna (Warrenton, VA / Fauquier) tossed in a final goal for the half with 41 second to goal as R-MC led by ten at the half.
  • Methodist scored to open the period, but Tiffey and Markovic connected moments later to put the spread back at ten. Markovic added his fourth and final goal with about 7:29 left. Methodist added two in a row, but the Yellow Jackets closed out the quarter with three in about 100 seconds. DiSesa added his fifth of the contest with 1:39 left. Marsilio added his second of the game with under a minute to play, putting R-MC up 16-5. Prusak finished the quarter taking a pass from freshman Kevin Andrews to put R-MC ahead 17-5.
  • The Yellow Jackets finished the game with a pair of goals in the fourth quarter. Prusak made an assisting pass to freshman Duncan O'Brien with 8:36 to go. Junior Jimmy Hasemann finished the quarter and the game with R-MC's 19th goal with 6:42 remaining in the frame. R-MC kept Methodist off the board for the fourth quarter.

Inside The Numbers

  • The Yellow Jackets held the advantage on shots 54-19. DiSesa led the team with 12 shots.
  • Sophomore Scott Ruelle (Clifton, VA / Centreville) led the team in caused turnovers, forcing three against the Monarchs. Andrews, seniors Jake Jones (Clifton, VA / Centreville), Camden Stramanak (Annapolis, MD / Annapolis) and Merrick Wood (Arnold, MD / Severna Park) as well as sophomore Thomas Gentry (Richmond, VA / Douglas S. Freeman) each forced one.
  • Senior Tyler Flora (Mechanicsville, VA / Hanover) picked up six ground balls today. Senior Dan Muller (Glen Allen, VA / Glen Allen) contributed four as well. R-MC gained 35 ground balls compared to Methodist's 18.
  • R-MC won 19 faceoffs. Junior Jack Silvernale (Warrenton, VA / Highland School) won six while Muller and senior Joe Maranto (Joppa, MD / Fallston) each won five. Freshman Collin Eitel earned two faceoff wins.
  • The Yellow Jackets were 15-16 on clear attempts.
