Davidson, Carr, and Stone Lead the Way for R-MC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ASHLAND, Va. – The 12th ranked Randolph-Macon Softball team recorded a win in their home opener today over Mary Washington before the second game ended in a tie after the field became too dark to continue.  Senior catcher Sami Davidson (Stafford, Va. / Brooke Point) led the way for R-MC finishing the day 3-6 with five RBI's including a three-run laser over the left field fence in the bottom of the seventh in game two that brought the score level.  Senior Maddie Stone (Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) also went 5 for 8 on the day with an RBI and fellow senior Brooklyne Carr (Windsor, Va. / Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) finished the day going 4 for 5 with an RBI and drawing a walk.

The Basics:

Scores: Game 1: R-MC 5, Mary Washington 1, Game 2: R-MC 5, Mary Washington 5

Records: Randolph-Macon: 1-0-1, Mary Washington: 3-2-1

How it Happened:

Game One:

  • R-MC got off to a hot start in game one with Davidson driving a ball up the middle that would score Stone who had advanced to second following a single through the left-hand side by junior Ali Celiberti (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan)
  • Mary Washington pulled a run back in the third inning, but the Jackets would take the lead again in the bottom of the fifth through Davidson whose sacrifice fly to left scored Stone again.
  • Randolph-Macon would open things up in the following inning as Carr sent a hot shot back up the middle to score pinch runner Isabella Brooks (Fredericksburg, Va. / Massaponax) before Stone would reach on a bunt single scoring Carr.  They grabbed their final run of the game off a heads-up baserunning decision by senior Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va. / St. Margaret's) who scored on a passed ball.
  • Celiberti would close out the game allowing just five hits over the course of her seven innings and striking out seven.

Game Two:

  • The Yellow Jackets fell behind early in game two but would get a run back in the bottom of the first as Stone scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Jacket bats would be quiet until the bottom of the seventh where Brooks grabbed a leadoff single to get R-MC started.  Hill would then shoot a single through the right-hand side before Celiberti hit a hard ground ball to shortstop that she beat out to load the bases.  Sophomore Erin Doyle (Moseley, Va. / Cosby High School) would hit a sacrifice fly to right field that would score Hill and bring the Jackets within three runs bringing Davidson to the plate.
  • Davidson hammered a ball over the left field fence to tie the game at 5-5 and took her to five RBI's on the day.  Neither team could find a breakthrough in extra innings and the game was called due to lack of light.

By the Numbers:

  • R-MC would reach double-digit hits in both games, with 10 in the first game and 14 in the second.  The first game saw RBI's from Stone, Carr, and Davidson.
  • Celiberti recorded seven strikeouts in the first game while only allowing five hits.
  • Carr and freshman Jessica Pittman (Virginia Beach, Va. / Kempsville High School) led the way in game two with the former recording three hits and the latter with two.
  • Freshman Rilee Baughan (Warsaw, Va. / Rappahannock High School) saw her first collegiate appearance in the circle and allowed no hits over her five innings of work while also recording a strikeout.

Up Next:

  • The Jackets will head to Raleigh, North Carolina for the Grand Slam Triangle classic where they'll play four games over the course of the weekend.  On Saturday they will face Kean at 2:30 PM before facing Piedmont which is scheduled for a 5 PM first pitch.  Sunday will bring games against McDaniel at 9:30 AM, and against host William Peace to wrap up the weekend at 2:30 PM.
