Olenyik Tallies 11 Kills Against Kean

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon senior Lee Olenyik (Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover) tallied 11 kills and added three blocks, including the Yellow Jackets' only solo block of the contest; but it was not enough as the Kean Cougars bested Men's Volleyball in a three-set match Saturday morning.

The Basics

Score: Kean 3, Randolph-Macon 0 (29-27, 25-21, 25-22)

Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./Alumni Gym

How It Happened

  • The teams battled to a 5-5 tie to begin the match. But from there, the Cougars earned a 5-1 run to put themselves ahead 10-6. After the Yellow Jackets scored on consecutive points, Kean again launched a rally to go ahead 17-10. R-MC scored three in a row late to close the gap, but Kean gained set point at 24-19. That was when R-MC rattled off five in a row to tie the set at 24-24. R-MC had the advantage at 26-25, but Kean scored four of the next five to win 29-27.
  • Kean took the early advantage in the second set, getting ahead 9-5. R-MC powered back to tie the set at 10-all, before taking the lead on a kill by freshman Kolby Gibson (Bumpass, Va. / Louisa). R-MC held the two-point advantage five separate times until Kean took the lead on a three consecutive points. R-MC returned the favor with two straight and tied the set at 20-20, but Kean scored five of the final six to win 25-21.
  • In the third set, the Cougars were able to capture a 6-3 lead early in the frame. Unlike in the other sets, R-MC did not ever gain an advantage through the first ten points. But after Kean locked in a 14-10 score, R-MC rallied for eight of 12 to tie the set at 18-18. R-MC tied the set twice more and gained a lead at 22-21, but the Cougars scored the final four points to win 25-22.
