How It Happened
- As had happened less than 48 hours before against Lynchburg, the Yellow Jackets got out to a fast start. R-MC put seven on the board before allowing Hollins to score its first points. Hollins got as close as three in the first period, but R-MC bumped it back out to ten at the quarter break, thanks to a 7-0 run to close the period, which included buckets by Ross and fellow senior Charlotte Woods (Richmond, Va. / Trinity) as well as trey by sophomore Cheridan Hatfield (Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial).
- R-MC added five more to start the second, making it nearly five-and-a-half minutes spanning the two quarters before Hollins put another point on the board. Arrington contributed a three-pointer to the run to start the second frame as well. The junior also added the only R-MC points in a 10-3 run moments later, which went the other way -- in favor of HU. R-MC was able to keep the distance for the remainder of the period though and left the half with a ten-point lead.
- Williams scored all five of R-MC's first points in the third quarter on a layup and a three-pointer. But HU's halftime adjustments gave the R-MC defense trouble. Hollins was able to go on a 9-2 run leading up to the 3:30-to-go mark. HU got as close as three with just under ten seconds to play in the period, but junior Elise Knobloch (Glenville, Pa. / Delone Catholic) hit a pair of free throws at the end to re-expand the gap to five heading into the fourth period.
- The teams mostly traded buckets over the first minutes of the fourth quarter, with R-MC keeping a seven-point lead heading into the media timeout for the frame. R-MC allowed just three Hollins points across nearly five minutes of play leading up to the two-minute mark. From there, R-MC allowed just two more points as the Yellow Jackets never allowed Hollins any room and won 61-51.
