How It Happened
- The Yellow Jackets and the Knights stayed close early in Game 1 before a kill by Olenyik gave R-MC a 9-6 lead. A kill by freshman Daniel Nguyen (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) gave the Yellow Jackets an 11-7 advantage. SAU used a 9-3 run to take a 16-14 edge. The Knights were up 20-19 before R-MC scored six of the final seven points to claim a 25-21 win. Freshman Kolby Gibson (Bumpass, Va./Louisa) had the game-clinching kill. The Yellow Jackets had a hit percentage of .192, compared to .091 by the Knights.
- The teams stayed within one point of each other early in the second game before SAU took an 8-6 lead. The Knights were ahead 15-12 before a 4-1 spurt by R-MC tied it at 16-16. SAU tallied five of the next six points to take a 21-17 lead on its way to a 25-21 win. The Knights had an attack percentage of .400, while the Yellow Jackets hit .231.
- SAU put up three of the first four points in Game 3 before R-MC scored six straight points to take a 7-3 lead, a lead it would not relinquish. Sophomore Lenny Sampson, Jr. (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) had three kills in the run and senior Corban Jungers (Ashland, Va./J.R. Tucker) had two, while the pair combined on two blocks. The lead grew to five at 10-5. Consecutive kills by Olenyik extended the lead to eight at 19-11. The Yellow Jackets would register a 25-17 win. R-MC hit .310, while the Knights hit .125.
- The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 3-1 lead before a 5-1 run by SAU gave the visitors a 6-4 edge. R-MC had a 6-2 spurt to claim a 10-8 advantage. The Knights built their lead to three at 20-17. Sampson and Gibson had kills in a 3-0 run as the Yellow Jackets tied it at 20-20. SAU was up 22-21 before a kill by Olenyik sparked a 4-0 spurt as R-MC claimed the 25-22 win. Freshman Sean Cunningham (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) had the match-clinching block. The Yellow Jackets hit .448 and the Knights hit .265.
