Women's Basketball Edges 'Cats

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Randolph-Macon Women's Basketball faced a final onslaught from the Randolph WildCats Wednesday night; but the Yellow Jackets used important opportunities early in each half to secure a road win against their Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 54, Randolph 48

Location/Venue: Lynchburg, Va./RAD Center

Records: Randolph-Macon (6-7, 5-3 ODAC), Randolph (5-9, 1-7 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • Both teams got off to slow starts offensively. After scoring their respective first buckets in the first minute of the contest, neither team could land any points for nearly four minutes of play. When the shots did start to fall, it was Randolph-Macon who left the first frame with an 11-7 lead as senior Michal Ross (Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) tallied two baskets in a row with under two minutes to play.
  • Randolph seemed to have an answer for every R-MC basket in the early stages of the second quarter, even catching a 5-0 run which cut R-MC's lead to just one with about five minutes to play in the period. But the Yellow Jackets reloaded as Ross fired off eight points over the last five minutes of the half to give R-MC a 27-22 lead heading into the halftime break.
  • The WildCats were able to get two quick buckets to begin the second half, again cutting R-MC's cushion to just one early in the frame. But sophomore Cheridan Hatfield (Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial) sank a three-pointer and senior Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C. / Halifax Academy) converted the hoop-and-harm to put R-MC back ahead by seven. A small scoring drought for both teams gave way to five Yellow Jacket points to end the quarter, which would prove critical in the final quarter.
  • Williams and Hatfield hit field goals in the early stages of the fourth period. The Yellow Jackets got to the largest lead of the game as Hatfield hit a three-pointer with 6:32 to go. The WildCats made a push in the final five minutes of the contest though, scoring 11 to R-MC's five. All five points came at the free throw-line with Hatfield, freshman Haley Pasqualone (Purcellville, Va. / Loudoun Valley) and junior Elise Knobloch (Glenville, Pa. / Delone Catholic) each hit shots at the stripe in the last three minutes to help keep R-MC ahead.

Inside The Numbers

  • Ross led the team with 13 points. She added a block, a steal and eight rebounds.
  • Williams earned her eighth double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds as well as a trio of steals.
  • Hatfield hit two three-pointers and was 75% from the free-throw line, finishing with nine points, a steal and four rebounds.
  • Pasqualone led the team in assists, handing out three tonight. Williams added two.
  • Senior Charlotte Woods (Richmond, Va./Trinity) and junior Becca Arrington (Amelia, Va./Amelia Academy) each had five points on the night, with Arrington scoring one field goal from beyond-the-arc.
