Hatfield's 21 Points Spearhead R-MC Women's Hoops over GC

ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Cheridan Hatfield (Fisherville, Va./Wilson Memorial) posted a career-high 21 points as the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team edged Guilford 63-59 in ODAC action on Saturday evening.

The Basics:

How it Happened:

  • The Quakers began the first quarter on a 9-0 run before the Yellow Jackets responded with a 7-0 run of their own to get the game back to a two-point deficit. During the stretch sophomore Aimee DeBell (Studley, Va./Saint Gertrude) provided the opening basket followed by a Rebecca Arrington (Amelia, Va./Amelia Academy) layup. DeBell made back-to-back jump shots to push the score to 11-9 in favor of the Quakers. After the Quakers pushed their lead back to five, senior Michal Ross (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) scored her first basket of the game followed by another Arrington bucket. A pair of late free throws by Arrington and senior center Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C./Halifax Academy) put the Jackets down one at the end of the first quarter, 20-19.
  • Hatfield provided a much-needed spark, draining back-to-back three-pointers giving the Yellow Jackets their first lead of the ball game at 27-26. Williams also made consecutive jump shots and added a free throw with 13 seconds remaining in the quarter, tying the ball game at 32 going into halftime.
  • R-MC came out on fire to open the third quarter, going on an immediate 8-0 run to lead 40-32. Over the stretch, Hatfield made a three-pointer followed by a Charlotte Woods (Richmond, Va./Trinity) layup and a Williams three-pointer giving the Yellow Jackets their largest lead of the contest at eight. Later in the quarter, Hatfield drained her fifth three-pointer giving her a game high 18 points. Hatfield was responsible for 12 of R-MC's 21 points in the third quarter pushing the Jackets lead to six at 53-47.
  • The Quakers began the fourth quarter on a 9-3 run tying the contest at 56 midway through the period. Following a pair of Williams free throws, DeBell made back-to-back mid-range jump shots to push the Yellow Jackets' lead back to five and helped R-MC secure the victory by a final score of 63-59.   

Inside the Numbers:

  • Hatfield scored a career-high 21 points going 7-15 from the field and 6-12 from three-point range.
  • R-MC had three score in double figures. Williams tallied 15 and DeBell finished with 10 off the bench.
  • The Yellow Jackets held a 37-24 advantage on the boards. Williams led all players with nine and DeBell grabbed seven. R-MC also had a 14-2 edge in second-chance points.
  • R-MC had an impressive 15 assists to Guilford's eight. Hatfield and Arrington both dished out four.
  • The Yellow Jackets forced 22 turnovers, with seven steals by Hatfield.
  • Williams had five blocked shots and Woods swatted two.
  • The victory marks the first time R-MC beat Guilford since the 2014 season.
