Proffitt Coach of the Year, Three Other Yellow Jackets Honored by VaSID

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon softball head coach Kevin Proffitt is the Commonwealth's College Division Coach of the Year, it was revealed by the Virginia Sports Information Directors on Wednesday morning. Three other Yellow Jackets landed on VaSID All-State teams as well, including two first team selections in recent graduates Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va. / Essex) and Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry). Junior Maddie Stone (Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) rounded out R-MC's award winners with a spot on the All-State Second Team.

Proffitt earns his first-ever VaSID Coach of the Year honor after wrapping up his 17th season at Randolph-Macon. Proffitt led the Yellow Jackets to their first Division III National Championship series berth in program history. This year, Proffitt guided seven players to All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference nods, a Schutt Sports/National Fastpitch Coaches Association National Player of the Year candidate and Fastpitch News Preseason All-American. The Yellow Jackets were ranked in the FPN Power Ranking for much of the season and ranked as high as tenth in the NFCA Division III Top 25 this year. Along the way to the National Championship in Tyler, Texas, Proffitt earned his first NCAA Tournament Regional and Super Regional titles. Proffitt has now completed four straight seasons with 30 wins or more and earned recognition as Coach of the Year in the ODAC in 2007. He reached his 400th victory on May 18th in the Super Regional-clinching victory against Christopher Newport.

Whittemore recently wrapped up a stellar career, in which she claimed several Randolph-Macon program records, including for career wins, strikeouts and earned run average. She was named the Most Outstanding Pitcher of the Newport News Super Regional and the Most Outstanding Player of the Ewing, N.J. Regional. She also earned recognition from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in the ODAC Tournament with an All-Tournament Team selection, while the ODAC coaches recognized her for her work all season with an All-ODAC Second Team pick. The National Fastpitch Coaches Association honored Whittemore with an All-South Region Third Team selection for her work this year as well and Fastpitch News named her an honorable mention All-American. She collected an ODAC Pitcher of the Week honor as well as a national Pitcher of the Week honor from the NFCA. She spent much of the season on the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division III National Player of the Year watchlist. Whittemore was also named to VaSID All-State teams as a sophomore and a junior.

Wood was an NFCA All-Atlantic Region Second Team selection. She had one of the top marks in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference this season for batting average, finishing with .418 average for the season. She led the team for RBIs with 39 and hit eight doubles and two triples while setting a new program-high for hits in a single season with 61. Wood neared the program record for hits in a career as well, which is notable since she played just three seasons with the Yellow Jackets. Wood was an All-ODAC First team selection this season, her second straight season earning a spot on the All-ODAC rolls. It's Wood's first VaSID All-State selection.

Stone was the ODAC's top second baseman, earning an All-ODAC First Team nod for her work this season. Stone led the conference in sacrifice hits with 15 and scored the second most runs on the team with 35. Her 0.33 sacrifice hits per game was a Top 15 mark in the nation as well. Stone's .373 average was one of the best for this year's core starters. Stone also collected 14 stolen bases this season. It's her first VaSID All-State selection.
