Davidson Squeezes Deeter Home as Whittemore Strikes Out 13 In Win

Box Score

EWING, New Jersey – Junior Sami Davidson (Stafford, Va. / Brooke Point) laid down a suicide squeeze with sophomore Kaitlyn Deeter (Roanoke, Va. / Lord Botetourt) coming home as Randolph-Macon won a tight 1-0 battle in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Meantime, Whittemore tied her season-high for strikeouts, capturing 13 in a classic pitcher's duel.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 1, Arcadia 0

Location/Venue: Ewing, New Jersey (The College of New Jersey)/Dr. June Walker Field

Records: Randolph-Macon (27-14), Arcadia (31-13)

How It Happened

  • Whittmore was in the groove early. She tallied the last two outs of the first inning via strikeout and repeated the action for the first two outs of the top of the second.
  • Whittemore then struck out the side in the top of the third inning.
  • Randolph-Macon scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Ali Celiberti (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) doubled to left field, sending the ball all the way to the fence. Deeter pinch ran for Celiberti and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by junior Taylor Sanderford (Mechanicsville, Va. / Atlee). Davidson then laid down the squeeze as Deeter took off and was safe at home, while Davidson earned the single after the perfectly executed play left nowhere to go for the Arcadia defense.
  • Whittemore capped the game off with a pair of strikeouts in the sixth inning and one in the seventh.

Inside The Numbers

  • Besides Celiberti and Davidson, senior Brittany LaPrade (Quinton, Va. / New Kent) and juniors Maddie Stone (Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) and Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va. / St. Margaret's) all recorded a hit for the Yellow Jackets.
  • Davidson got the RBI credit for her hit, giving her 16 RBIs on the season.
  • Whittemore reached her season-high for strikeouts, tying her effort against Ferrum on April 17. Both outings totaled 13. She also allowed just a single walk and two hits in today's start. The win was her 17th of the season.
