Four Softball Yellow Jackets Earn All-Tournament Honors

Box Score

SALEM, Va. – Randolph-Macon softball fell to top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan Monday morning in the final game of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament. But four Yellow Jackets were honored for their work throughout the tournament with spots on the All-Tournament Team.

The Basics

Score: #1 (No. 1) Virginia Wesleyan 8, #4 Randolph-Macon 2

Location/Venue: Salem, Va./Moyer Sports Complex

Records: Virginia Wesleyan 40-4, Randolph-Macon 26-14

How It Happened

  • Randolph-Macon scored with its first chances. Senior Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va. / Grafton) bunted her way aboard. She stole second moments later.  Junior Maddie Stone (Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) attempted to bunt her over with a sacrifice, but executed it so perfectly that it turned into a single for Stone, getting Roth over to third and herself on. That allowed senior Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) to drive Roth in for the first run of the game. Senior Brittany LaPrade (Quinton, Va. / New Kent) bunted Wood and Stone up a base, putting both in scoring position for senior Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va. / Patrick Henry), who singled to bring in Stone.
  • Sophomore Madie Rhoads (Portsmouth, Va. / Nansemond River), working in the circle, pitched a three-up, three-down bottom of the first.
  • Virginia Wesleyan struck for six in the bottom of the second inning, taking advantage of a trio of walks and an R-MC error.
  • R-MC had runners aboard in the third and fifth innings, but could never bring them around.
  • VWU added one each in the fifth and sixth innings, finalizing the championship with the 8-2 score.

Inside The Numbers

  • Wood finished the day 3-3 with an RBI, while both Roth and Whittemore finished 2-3. Roth scored a run as well.
  • Stone and junior Sami Davidson (Stafford, Va. / Brooke Point) each recorded a hit as well.
  • Rhoads was the pitcher of record, going 1.1 innings. Sophomore Ali Celiberti (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) pitched 4.2 innnings in relief and made two strikeouts.

All-Tournament Team

Four Yellow Jackets earned All-Tournament Team honors. Roth earned the accolade for her work on base and in the outfield over the course of the tournament, while Wood and Sanderford earned the honors for their work at the plate and in the infield. Whittemore, who pitched three games in the tournament, won for her efforts in the circle during the tournament.

Up Next

As a regionally-ranked team (8th in the most recent poll, with another due out this week), Randolph-Macon will await the NCAA Selection Committee's decision to see if it earns an at-large bid. The NCAA Selection Show for Division III Softball will be Monday, May 6 at 1:00 PM and will stream live at ncaa.com.
