How It Happened
- The Yellow Jackets opened the game with seven of the first nine points. Arrington had a trey and Ross converted on a jumper in those first moments. But R-MC had some empty possessions on the offensive end as the clock ran down and CNU earned a five-point lead heading into the second quarter.

R-MC got an 8-2 run, including five points from Arrington leading up to the 6:30 mark, which got the Yellow Jackets within one. CNU got some cushion as the Captains got nine straight points leading up to the 2:00 mark. The Captains kept the distance leading into halftime, although sophomore Janelle De Guzman (Raleigh, N.C. / St. Thomas More Academy) sunk a three-pointer with under 30 seconds to play to cut the CNU lead to just seven at the break
- Arrington started the second half out with a three-pointer and Ross added a layup, which kept R-MC within striking distance early in the third. The Yellow Jackets kept marching toward the lead and finally got there on a pair of free throws late in the quarter. Sophomore Aimee DeBell (Studley, Va. / Saint Gertrude) earned the chances at the charity stripe, which tied the game at 55. CNU got four quick points before the end of the period, while Williams added a layup which kept the score within two heading into the fourth quarter.
- Ross tallied a layup which tied the game at 59 in the opening moments of the fourth quarter. The teams went nearly point-for-point leading up to the midway mark of the period, but a 6-2 run for CNU helped give the Captains a seven-point advantage with about 5:00 to play. R-MC was able to wipe much of that off the board thanks to a 6-2 run of its own, in which senior Charlotte Woods (Richmond, Va./Trinity) made a trio of buckets. The run expanded to 9-2, which gave R-MC its first lead of the second half with 1:41 to go. CNU's Natalie Terwilliger hit a three-pointer to return the favor though and down the stretch, CNU gained a free throw, while Williams hit a bucket to tie the game at 80, requiring an extra frame. R-MC lost Arrington to fouls for the extra period.
- R-MC took the lead early in the frame as Williams hit a layup in the first few seconds. CNU got back-to-back buckets, which returned the advantage to the Captains. Christopher Newport's defense forced a few R-MC turnovers and Terwilliger hit two straight three-pointers heading into the last minute-and-a-half which sealed the game for CNU.
