Big Third Quarter Lifts Men's Lacrosse

WINCHESTER, Va. – Already on top 6-3, Randolph-Macon men's lacrosse scored five goals in the third quarter to help button up a 13-5 win over the Shenandoah Hornets (6-8, 2-5 ODAC) on Wednesday evening in Winchester. Randolph-Macon (8-7, 3-4 ODAC) got four goals from sophomore Brendan Markovic (Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) and three from senior Miles Muncie (Midlothian, VA / Midlothian).

Muncie got the game's first goal 56 seconds into the contest, scoring an unassisted goal and pushing R-MC ahead.

Shenandoah tied the game, but R-MC answered threefold in the quarter. After the SU score at 12:06, senior Kyle Keepers (Roswell, GA / Roswell) scored with 11:12 remaining in the period to put R-MC up 2-1. Sophomore Colin DiSesa (Ashland, Va. / Hanover) scored after Muncie sent him a pass that DiSesa took to the cage with 7:07 remaining to give R-MC the two goal advantage. Markovic scored his first of the game in the period with 4:48 left and sophomore Davis Hitt (Annapolis, Md. / Annapolis) assisted on the goal.

SU cut the lead about three minutes into the period, scoring with 12:02 and leaving R-MC up 4-2. Sophomore Ryan Tiffey (Colombia, Md. / Wilde Lake) found the net after a pass from Muncie with 9:12 remaining. Shenandoah scored following the faceoff though to leave the R-MC lead at two.

Muncie scored his second of the day with 2:10 remaining in the second as R-MC went into the break up 6-3.

Out of the intermission, R-MC's defense was stout, not allowing a score in the third quarter.

Meantime, Muncie finished off his day with a goal at 12:48 remaining. Muncie is the team leader for goals, tallying 29 to date.

Sophomore Nate Malinowski (Middle River, Md. / Boys' Latin) got R-MC's next score, an unassisted goal with 11:21 remaining. It marked Malinowski's third goal of the season.

The rest of the quarter belonged to Markovic. He scored three in a row for the Yellow Jackets, including two within 30 seconds of each other. At 10:19, he put an unassisted goal into the cage to push R-MC up 9-3.

Then, after a faceoff won by sophomore Joe Maranto (Joppa, Md. / Fallston) and a ground ball pickup by sophomore Ben Swavely (Downington, Pa. / Downington East), Markovic scored with 9:58 remaining in the period with the assist dished out by DiSesa.

Markovic got his last strike of the afternoon with nine seconds left in the quarter, sending R-MC into the fourth quarter up 11-3.

Shenandoah got its first goal of the second half with a score with 12:46 left in the fourth quarter. But the goal was answered about two minutes later as junior Ty Anderson took a pass from Tiffey and scored R-MC's 12th goal of the game. SU added one more as did R-MC when senior Coleman Adams (Mechanicsville, VA / St. Christopher's) scored on an unassisted play with 3:41 left.

Junior goalkeeper Chris Cerrina (Ridgewood, NJ / Ridgewood) made five saves in his 60 minutes in goal. Also on the defensive front, R-MC allowed just 17 shots and caused 14 SU turnovers. Senior Kyle Geblein (Hagerstown, MD / Smithsburg) led the team with four caused turnovers while juniors Matt Surock (Baltimore, MD / Loch Raven) and Austin Evans (Glen Allen, VA / Glen Allen) kicked in two each.

R-MC's faceoff unit was spectacular, grabbing 16 of 21 opportunities and allowing just five faceoffs to the Hornets. Maranto won 5-6 while sophomore Dan Muller (Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) won 10-14. Swavely picked up nine ground balls on the afternoon with Geblein, Adams, Evans and senior Tyee Buttrey (Damascus, MD / Damascus) each capturing three.

Randolph-Macon will face Randolph at home on Saturday at 1:00 PM. The team will mark the occasion as Senior Day for the team's eight graduating players.
