Whittemore Wins Twice, Hill Homers Twice for #18 R-MC Softball vs. RC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ASHLAND, Va. - Sophomore Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) earned a pair of victories and freshman Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va./St. Margaret's) hammered a pair of home runs as the 18th-ranked Randolph-Macon softball team swept an ODAC doubleheader from Roanoke on Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets (29-7, 12-6 ODAC) took the opener 1-0 before outscoring the Maroons (23-15, 11-9 ODAC) 12-5 in Game 2.

Whittemore went the distance in Game 1, scattering seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

R-MC scored its lone run in the sixth. Junior Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va./Brunswick) had a leadoff double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.

RC had a pair of singles in the seventh, but a flyout to center ended the contest.

The Maroons struck for two runs in the top of the first in Game 2. The Yellow Jackets answered in the second. Junior Skylar Toth (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) had a leadoff homer to cut the deficit to one, Whittemore singled and scored when Hill went deep to center to give R-MC a 3-2 lead.

RC put up three in the fourth to take a 5-3 advantage before R-MC responded in the fifth. Freshman Maddie Stone (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) had a leadoff single and was sacrificed to second. Jones homered to right center to level the score at 5-5. Toth singled and moved to second when freshman Sami Davidson (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) walked.

Controversy ensued, as junior Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va./Rappahannock) pinch-ran for Toth at second. The home plate umpire told the RC dugout that Mulvena was a pinch-hitter, not a pinch-runner. Hill came to bat and blasted a three-run homer to center, giving the Yellow Jackets an 8-5 lead. The Maroons protested at this point, saying Mulvena should have been the batter instead of Hill. After the umpires had a lengthy discussion with the ODAC supervisor of umpires, play continued with the game under protest.

R-MC loaded the bases with walks and sophomore Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Jones doubled to right, clearing the bases and giving R-MC a 12-5 advantage.

Whittemore (17-3) pitched the final three innings for the Yellow Jackets with two hits and four strikeouts.

Jones and Hill both had two hits and five RBI for R-MC.

Randolph-Macon is scheduled to travel to Bridgewater on Tuesday to complete their doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets held a 5-2 lead in the opener this past Thursday when the game was suspended in the top of the sixth due to inclement weather.
