Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon softball team opened the 2017 season with two wins over Frostburg State. R-MC beat FSU 3-2 in the first game and won by a score of 5-4 in the second game.
In game one, sophomore pitcher Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./ Patrick Henry) earned her first victory of the year recording eight strikeouts. She gave up only four hits in 32 batters faced.
Randolph-Macon scored all three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Junior Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va./ Rappahannock) led off by hitting a single to right field. Freshman Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va./ St. Margaret's) was then walked before junior Harley Jones (Bordnax, Va./ Brunswick) hit a home run to left field to give R-MC a 3-0 advantage.
In the top of the fifth inning, Frostburg State had loaded up the bases with just one out. Whittemore would then strike out the next two batters to leave all three Bobcats on base. R-MC would win game one 3-2. Sophomore Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./ Essex) led the team with two hits.
R-MC would win game two by just one run as well.
Sophomore Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va./ Grafton) had two hits, a run and an RBI in the win.
After Frostburg opened the scoring in the top of the third, R-MC answered with a two run inning, with Mulvena and Roth scoring.
The Yellow Jackets then scored two more runs in the fifth inning. Randolph-Macon hit two back-to-back double with Wood hitting the first and Jones hitting the second to score. Jones then scored when senior Jen Balcom (Powhatan, Va./ Powhatan) singled to center.
Randolph-Macon (2-0) will play a double header tomorrow against TCNJ at 12 p.m. at the R-MC Softball Field.
