Lodge, Walsh Earn First Team All-America Honors a Second Time

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon senior third baseman Travis Lodge (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) and senior pitcher James Walsh (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) were recognized for a second time as First Team All-Americans as the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) released the 2016 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division III All-America teams.

Lodge and Walsh were previously named to the 2016 D3baseball.com All-America First Team.

Lodge and Walsh are just the second and third First Team All-Americans in program history. First baseman Jordan Walton was a First Team All-American in 2011 by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and by D3baseball.com. Walton was Second Team All-America by the ABCA in 2012. Pitcher Travis Beazley was Second Team All-America by the ABCA in 2006.

Lodge was one of the top hitters in the nation this season. He was South Region Player of the Year and All-South Region First Team by both D3baseball.com and the ABCA. The ODAC Player of the Year and an All-ODAC First Team selection, Lodge batted .426 this season (31st in the nation) with slugging percentage of .818 (seventh in the country) and on-base percentage of .535 (14th in nation). He set a program record with 13 home runs, the seventh highest total in Division III this season. Lodge was eighth in the country in homers per game with 0.33. He set a program mark with 51 RBI this season. Lodge had 63 hits, 41 runs, 13 doubles and three triples. He was named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week three times during the season.

In the Mideast Regional, Lodge led the Yellow Jackets with six RBI. He had five hits, five runs, two doubles, one homer, and 10 total bases. Lodge was named to the All-Regional Team.

During his four-year career, Lodge hit 18 home runs, the fourth-highest total in program history. He is third in program history with 59 extra-base hits, fifth with 37 doubles, sixth with 258 total bases, seventh with 159 hits, seventh with 295 at-bats, eighth with 104 runs, 11th with 63 walks and 12th with 94 RBI

Walsh was dominant on the mound for the Yellow Jackets in 2016. He was South Region Pitcher of the Year and All-South Region First Team by both the ABCA and D3baseball.com. The ODAC Pitcher of the Year and an All-ODAC First Team performer, Walsh posted a 10-0 record in 14 starts this season with a 1.98 ERA. He is fourth in the nation with the 10 wins, the top mark in program history. He is also fifth in the country with 14 starts. Walsh has 14 starts and worked 95.1 innings, both first in program history. He struck out 102, the fourth-highest total in the country and second in program history. Beazley fanned 108 for the Yellow Jackets in 2006. Walsh is 14th in the nation with a WHIP of 0.94 and 15th in the country with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 6.80.

Walsh had his finest collegiate outing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament's Mideast Regional on May 18. Walsh tossed a three-hit shutout with a career-high 15 strikeouts as R-MC topped St. Joseph's (Long Island) 8-0. It was the first NCAA Tournament victory in R-MC baseball history. Walsh did not walk a batter and faced just three over the minimum.

In two regional starts, Walsh worked 15.0 innings with eight hits, one run, two walks and 20 strikeouts. His regional ERA was 0.60 and opponents' batting average was .154. Walsh was voted onto the Mideast Regional All-Tournament Team.

During his three-year career with the Yellow Jackets, Walsh posted a 20-5 record with an ERA of 2.46. He is third in program history with 20 career wins, fifth with a winning percentage of .800, fourth with 34 starts, and first with 227 strikeouts.

The Yellow Jackets, under 12th-year head coach Ray Hedrick, ended their most successful season with a 35-8-1 record. R-MC set a program mark for victories in a season and the senior class collected 108 wins over the past four years, the first class in program history to pass the century mark in victories. The Yellow Jackets reached the regional finals for the first time in program history.
