Box Score 2 LYNCHBURG, Va. – Freshman Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) and sophomore Nelda Bagley (Kenbridge, Va./Central) both tossed shutouts as the Randolph-Macon softball team swept an ODAC doubleheader at Randolph on Sunday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (22-6, 5-1 ODAC) took the opener 4-0 before claiming Game 2 by a score of 3-0 over the Wildcats (14-14, 3-9 ODAC). R-MC has won seven straight games and 14 of the past 15 contests.
Whittemore (12-2) went the distance in Game 1 with five hits, one walk and four strikeouts. She recorded her sixth shutout of the season.
R-MC stranded a pair in each of the first two innings and broke the scoreless deadlock in the top of the third. Sophomore Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va./Rappahannock) had a leadoff single to center and stole second with one away. Sophomore Skylar Toth (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) singled to short, moving Mulvena to third. Senior Sierra Ford (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) reached on a fielder's choice and brought home Mulvena to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Randolph threatened in the fifth, loading the bases with one away. Whittemore got a grounder to third that turned into a forceout at home and followed that with a strikeout to keep it a 1-0 contest.
The Yellow Jackets added to their lead in the seventh. Freshman Diane McDaniel (Fauquier, Va./Liberty) had a leadoff triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mulvena to make it 2-0. Senior Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va./Patrick Henry) doubled and scored on a homer to left by Ford to extend the lead to 4-0. It was the third homer of the season for Ford.
Ford drove in three, while Gilman went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a run.
In Game 2, Bagley went the distance with five hits, one walk and seven strikeouts. Bagley registered her second shutout of the season.
R-MC did all its scoring in the fourth. Gilman drew a leadoff walk and freshman pinch-runner Cori Spartana (Baltimore, Md./St. Timothy's) moved to second on a single to left by Ford. Spartana scored on a wild pitch and Ford moved to second to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead. A double by sophomore Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va./Brunswick) plated Ford to make it 2-0. Jones was sacrificed to third by Toth and scored on a fielder's choice by freshman Casey Abernethy (Prince George, Va./Prince George) to give R-MC a 3-0 advantage.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Wednesday, April 6, with a 3 p.m. ODAC doubleheader at Virginia Wesleyan.
